Permanent, Full Time. 4-night rota – Mon-Sun working 38 hours per week between 22:00 – 08:00
Location: Homebased role
Salary: £26,319.18 + shift allowance

Serco has a exciting opportunity for Substance Misuse Advisors to work from home on a 4 night rota for the office of Health Improvement and Disparities.

As the Substance Misuse Adviser your primary role is to provide information on all aspects of substance misuse to the general public via telephone helpline and promote key messages on risk reduction as defined by Office for Health Improvement and Disparities. You will signpost service users to appropriate services for their needs and assist them beyond any barriers in accessing these services. You must be non-judgemental, calm, able to explain complex medical concerns in a simple and straight forward way and demonstrate a respectful and proactive approach to the needs of those in groups of inclusion.



What you’ll need to do the role:

At least 6 months’ experience of actively working within a role that included the provision of information, advice, and support face to face and/or over the telephone in relation to health, mental health, alcohol, drugs and/or smoking, for example:


- Health Promotion
- Smoking Cessation Adviser
- Drug or alcohol worker
- Education/Youth work
- General health/mental health


Experience of working unsociable hours is preferred.

Essential technical and professional skills, knowledge and qualifications

- HNC/HND in a relevant subject related to health/health promotion or Nursing diploma/degree, CQSW/ Diploma Social Work or relevant degree such as: Psychology, Health Science, Social Sciences, Health Promotion, Education or
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including a confident telephone manner with the ability to engage and build rapport quickly with people to assess their needs in a timely manner
- The ability to adhere to a defined remit and work to service and professional boundaries
- A genuine interest in the subject area of substance misuse and smoking cessation
- Emotional maturity and self-awareness
- Ability to handle the sensitive nature of calls/contacts to the service with empathy, professionalism, and a non-judgemental approach.
