Summary

The Chief Operating Officer Group works closely with the Home Office’s policy and operational commands to enable us together to deliver the department’s priorities. The group is comprised of different teams and professional functions, including Commercial, Finance, People, Portfolio and Project Delivery, Security, Estates and Information and Digital, Data and Technology.

The Management Accounts Officer is a key position within the Management Accounting Unit (MAU) and requires the post holder to support the HEO in monthly financial reporting activities.

The post holder will also support the SEO / HEO in providing robust analysis for use by the Finance Business Partner, when delivering professional, timely advice and challenge to specific business areas.

The Management Accounting Unit (MAU) is a key aspect of finance in the Home Office. MAU are responsible for gathering, analysing and reporting all financial information for Operational areas to make informed decisions. MAU ensure the accuracy of the in-month accounting treatment, budget reporting, ensuring all variances are interrogated, assisting the Finance Business Partners and Operational business areas ensuring forecasts reflect true position.

As a Management Accounts Officer you will be required to undertake critical analysis of financial transactions through interrogating financial information, support with the creation of management board reports for Operational areas and support with the monthly forecasting and annual budget setting during the financial year.

Main Responsibilities

Forecasting

  • Deliver forecasting of material expenditure items; based on proportionate and insightful analysis of the business Meet monthly milestones, taking responsibility for delivery of forecasts.
  • Assisting with the consolidation of the overall forecast, providing a narrative explanation of material changes and summary level supporting volumes.
  • Improve the quality of the forecasts in terms of accuracy and volatility.
  • Adopt standardised systems and processes to ensure a consistent approach is taken, processes are well documented and shared.

Month End Reporting and Integrity

  • Assist in the production and distribution of generic dashboard reports to required timescales.
  • Take responsibility for material journal adjustments and accruals; ensure all adjustments are signed off and posted within the required timescales.
  • Complete daily and monthly reconciliations of cash received to source data.

Budget Management

  • Populate planning templates with trend data to inform the annual budget planning.
  • Collate and upload individual budgets to agreed timetables and in compliance with standardised processes.

Analytical Services

  • Responding to ad hoc commissions from FBPs, PQ / FOI data; spend by supplier or data trends across years.
  • Calculate savings, where this is not supported by embedded resource.
  • Supporting structural change e.g. hierarchy changes/revised budget delegations.

The post holder may be required to undertake additional responsibilities as expected in relation to the role and grade.

Working Pattern

This role is available on a full-time basis with the option of compressed hours working. This role is also suitable for part-time working hours.
