JOB DESCRIPTION
Part-Time Personal Assistant
A LITTLE ABOUT MYSELF
I am a 78 year old man, originally from Barry, now living in a multigenerational household in Dinas Powys. We hope to move later in the year to Barry (West End). I live with my wife and our 2 daughters who are 18 and 28, and who work or study partly from home.
I have Lewy Body Dementia (LBD); this brings Parkinsons symptoms which impact my movement, balance, co-ordination of small practical tasks, and speech. As a family we are still adjusting to my diagnosis and are keeping a positive outlook and good humour. Due to the unpredictable nature of LBD, my attention span can be poor, my memory and vision can play tricks on me and I am prone to forgetting recent events, or losing the thread in conversation.
In my earlier years I worked for the Bank of England in London, as an administrator. Later, I did freelance copy editing and maintained several gardens in the local area. My passion for gardening inspires me to study this via online courses, and I now need some help to keep my own garden in order! I also enjoy local history, and have a keen interest in steam trains and current affairs. I spend time watching murder mysteries/ thrillers and history programmes, and like getting outdoors for walks or a potter in town, though now I need some support to get out and about safely.
PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The main goal of this role is to assist me in maintaining my independence and help me regain confidence in going out and about in the community, communicating with people and in daily tasks at home e.g. organising my belongings, eating and drinking, recreation etc . Your support will allow me to lead an active, more confident life despite my health challenges.
RATE(S) OF PAY
£14.50 per hour
HOURS OF WORK
4 hours (2 hours/day x 2 weekdays)
Days and times can be arranged flexibly
TASKS CAN INCLUDE
Accompanying me on local walks, offering assistance if necessary, and encouraging me to stay active.
Providing companionship, engaging in light conversation over a cup of tea, or a good film/documentary
Accompanying me to local group activity or on an outing e.g. to a garden centre, coffee shop, charity/vintage browsing
On days when in the house, to help organise my day, and to keep my belongings tidy; I’ll need to sort various things when we move
Prompting me to remember my meds or exercises.
To prepare a snack or lunch/drinks if needed.
Making sure my safety and mobility is looked after.
TYPE OF PERSON REQUIRED
Someone who is encouraging and motivating.
A sociable and friendly person
Someone who has similar interests to myself or appreciates my interests
A driver with business class insurance.
A person who can go with the flow as my days can fluctuate – my energy can dip on some days and so plans can change
Someone who can be patient and listen well, as my communication can be quite slow or quiet.
ABOUT THE JOB
This position is subject to satisfactory references and a DBS Disclosure (Police Check), which must be completed prior to the commencement of employment. The cost of this check will be covered by the Local Authority.
All necessary checks will be conducted to verify that any candidate has the legal right to work in the UK before employment begins.
Although this is a part-time role, it is a legitimate position requiring the submission of a National Insurance number. Employment will commence under an initial trial period.
Wages will be paid on a four-weekly / monthly basis and appropriate holiday pay will be provided.
Please note: Dewis Centre for Independent Living is acting on behalf of a third party and will not serve as your employer or be liable for any issues arising from your employment should you be offered the position.
