We are excited to invite you to apply for the role of Resident Clinical Fellow within the Same Day Emergency Care Department (SDEC) part of the Emergency Medicine Directorate at Southport Hospital

Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust provides healthcare in hospital and the community to 258,000 people across Southport, Formby and West Lancashire.

Acute care is provided at Southport and Formby District General Hospital and Ormskirk and District General Hospital. This includes adults’ and children’s accident and emergency services, intensive care and a range of medical and surgical specialities. Women’s and children’s services, including maternity, are provided at Ormskirk hospital.

Applicants must be eligible for full Registration with the GMC at time of appointment.
• The post is based at Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospital and will join the existing multi-disciplinary team of Acute Physicians, Nurse Consultant, ANPs and Physicians Associate in delivering acute patient care in the General Medical Unit
• This post is ideal for junior doctors planning a career in acute or general medicine to gain exposure in a fast-paced unit managing acute patients on ambulatory pathways.
• Whilst this is a non-training post, post holders will have a clinical educational supervisor and will be able to attend teaching session in the Trust as well as accessing the well-equipped library with IT facilities. There is also the opportunity to have an electronic portfolio (for a fee)
• This post will not form part of the acute medical on call rota.

Clinical Responsibilities
1. Ensure timely treatment plans for patients are actioned.
2. Ensure timely referrals to the appropriate specialty where further advice or admission is required.
3. Undertake assessment of acute medical patients attending the Ambulatory Care Unit/SDEC, making decisions on treatment plans.
4. Liaise with the Emergency Department, NWAS and review electronic GP referral letters to aid in identification of appropriate patients for Ambulatory Care Unit.
5. Liaise with other departments in the hospital as the patient’s condition dictates.
6. Co-operation with outside agencies, including Primary Care and community services as required.

Professional Responsibilities
1. Ensure timely and high-quality discharge communication to Primary Care for safe ongoing care.
2. Participate in the teaching and supervision of the work and duties of the junior doctors in training.
3. Assist in the compilation, checking and analysis of data for medical audit.
4. So far as it is consistent with the proper discharge of the above duties, the post holder undertakes to deputise from time to time for absent colleagues.
5. The post holder undertakes, exceptionally, to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances
6. The post holder undertakes, exceptionally, to be available for such irregular commitments outside normally rostered duties as are essential for continuity of patient care.

Administrative Responsibilities

There is a Postgraduate Medical Education Centre on the Hospital sites with library and study facilities. Study leave will be provided to support and develop the post holder’s interests. Counselling and education guidance will be dealt with in the first instance through dialogue with the Lead Clinician in General Surgery.

Teaching & Training Responsibilities

Every opportunity will be provided to the appointee to develop special interests and skills in aspects of medical care, information technology, medical audit, etc. The post holder will maintain his/her own continuing professional development in line with current guidelines on professional responsibilities.
