The fellowship offers 12 months in a busy tertiary referral centre for pelvic floor disorders. The unit provides patients with all conservative and surgical treatments for pelvic floor dysfunction. The successful candidate will work within a large multi-disciplinary team managing complex pelvic floor dysfunction including multi-compartment disorders, abnormalities in gastrointestinal motility and complications of pelvic mesh surgery.
University Hospital Southampton has a large colorectal department that also deals with complex and recurrent colorectal cancer, robotics, intestinal failure and abdominal wall reconstruction. Whilst the focus of the fellowship will on developing clinical and operative skills in the field of pelvic floor surgery, opportunities to see other aspects of colorectal practice will be possible.

There is weekly access to colorectal pelvic floor theatre lists and combined operating with urogynaecology and urology. Through this, development of minimally invasive operative skills will be achieved, including sacral nerve stimulation and prolapse surgery.
There are weekly specialist clinics, one-stop clinics and a perineal tear clinic with opportunities to learn pelvic floor diagnostics including pelvic floor ultrasound and anorectal physiology. This will give exposure to patients with congenital and developmental conditions and the management of paediatric to adult transition. Presentation at the pelvic floor MDT and Mesh MDT meetings will be expected.
There is scope and opportunity for audit and research in the field of pelvic floor surgery with support to present findings at national meetings and prepare outcomes for publication.
There is no on-call commitment associated with the post however support of the colorectal in-patient service will be expected with participation in the departments ‘registrar of the week’ rota and cross-cover sometimes required in the event of illness.
Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists).
Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave. All licensed doctors must meet the GMC requirements for revalidation and there will be an annual appraisal to support this process.
Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular.
Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)
Basic Salary – MT04 £65,048 Basic Salary – MT05 £73,992
Salary will be assessed based on experience and skills. Eligibility criteria for appointment to a Nodal Point 5;
• Have a minimum of 6 years of Specialty training
• Hold relevant higher specialty exam (e.g FRCP, FRCA, FRCS)
• A portfolio of evidence that demonstrates they meet the criteria for progression (in line with the Curriculum for the speciality similar to deanery trainee)
Travelling expenses will not be paid for attending interview
Please note that GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential for this role.
Successful applicants will already have GMC registration or will be able to demonstrate they are eligible.
