Summary

The Cancer MDT Coordinator plays a pivotal role in managing and streamlining the diagnostic and treatment pathways for cancer patients. Based in the Cancer Services Directorate, the role involves coordinating multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, tracking patient progress to ensure timely treatment, and maintaining accurate data in compliance with national cancer standards. The post holder will work closely with clinicians, operational managers, and other healthcare professionals to support optimal patient care while adhering to the Trust’s vision and values of excellence, kindness, responsibility, and respect.

The post holder will be responsible for organizing and documenting MDT meetings, ensuring all clinical data is available to support decision-making. Key duties include maintaining a tracking system for patients suspected or diagnosed with cancer, ensuring adherence to cancer waiting time targets, and escalating delays to appropriate managers. They will actively contribute to national data submissions and participate in peer reviews. In addition, the role involves providing cross-cover for colleagues and developing protocols to ensure service continuity during staff absences.

St George’s, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals and Health Group cares for a population of four million people in South West London and North East Surrey. Our sites include St George’s Hospital, one of 11 major trauma centres in the UK and the largest healthcare provider and major teaching hospital in the area; St Helier Hospital, home to the South West Thames Renal and Transplantation Unit and Queen Mary's Hospital for Children; and Epsom Hospital, home to the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC).

After years of collaboration, our two Trusts became a hospitals group in 2021. While remaining as two separate Trusts, being a hospitals group will help us to collaborate more closely on research, and the development, education, and training of our 17,000-strong workforce.

The Cancer MDT Coordinator will:

1. Coordinate MDT Meetings: Schedule meetings, prepare patient lists, collect relevant clinical data, and document decisions using the Cancer Information System. Flexibility in working hours is required to attend early or late meetings.

2. Navigate Patient Pathways: Track patient progress along diagnostic and treatment pathways, ensuring compliance with national targets. Communicate with clinical teams and escalate breaches in a timely manner to enable corrective action.

3. Data Management: Collect and input data into systems such as the National Cancer Waiting Times database and relevant audits, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.

4. Cross-Cover Support: Provide cover for other coordinators during leave and assist in developing clear protocols for service continuity.

5. General Responsibilities: Uphold confidentiality, ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, and maintain a professional appearance. Additionally, the post holder will actively participate in training, staff meetings, and performance reviews to support personal and professional development.
