Summary
“In line with the NHS long term plan to tackle tobacco dependency, advisors will work with ELFT inpatient services, ELFT community services, and local authority services to deliver smoking cessation support for ELFT service users.
The Tobacco Dependency Advisor will work face to face on Newham Centre for Mental Health wards Monday to Friday 9am to 5 pm. They will be using evidence based guidance and good practice to help service users with severe mental Health illness to quit stop smoking. The work involves supporting and training staff to provide stop smoking interventions using established systems and processes to facilitate this and report interventions and quit attempts.
This role will require a creative and flexible attitude to work with service users who access mental health services, including those who are or have been in mental health inpatient settings. Service users may require unique and bespoke approaches to support stop smoking.This will include knowledge and skills of working with service users subject to the Mental Health Act and the Mental Capacity Act legislation”
· The post holder will be responsible for: 1:1 and group smoking interventions for in-patients and community follow up. This includes assessment of clients, provision of specialist advice on how to stop smoking, monitoring pharmacotherapy treatments and maintaining motivational support.
· Carbon Monoxide Monitoring.
· Ensure that smoking status and treatments are entered into the patient record and communicated to the patients GP.
· Ensure that service users who have reduced or stopped smoking are supported to continue with this on discharge.
· The post holder will maintain and use specialist knowledge and experience of Stop Smoking to provide intensive and appropriate evidence based Stop Smoking advice and support smokers who wish to quit in accordance with national and local protocols.
· They will be responsible for their own practice when delivering Stop Smoking advice and support to clients in line with National guidance on service delivery.

Clinical
· Provide evidence based advice on nicotine replacement and other medications to facilitate stop smoking interventions including e cigarettes to service users.
· Provide 1:1 and group training to and support to mental health staff so they are confident in offering stop smoking interventions to their patients
· Ensure a robust STOP Smoking service is established and systems and processes are developed for referring patients and provision of Stop Smoking services to staff
· Build strong links and work in partnership with the local public health department smoking cessation leads maximising their input to the benefit of service users.
· The post holder will liaise with all teams in the directorate they are appointed
· The post holder will record assessment, care plans and follow up on Smoking cessation on the patient Rio Electronic record.
· The post holder will record on the lifestyle and Smoking templates whereby Stop Smoking interventions and Quit attempts and successful Quitting is reported Rio
· Any concerns about a patient should be reported, recorded and escalated to the Registered Nurse in charge as required and appropriate.
· Participate in Clinical supervision and Trust Appraisal in line with policies.
