Summary

We seek a colleague interested in Acute Medicine as their primary commitment but will support candidates wanting to continue clinical interests or work in liaison roles with other specialities, for example: Stroke Neurology Geriatric Medicine Acute Oncology Haematology Endocrinology Cardiology Respiratory Emergency Department Psychiatry (liaison only) For an outstanding candidate, we may be able to consider a joint appointment with another specialty. *Interested candidates are encouraged to register their interests with the Acute Medicine Head of Service prior to interview. We are ambitious in our plans to develop and improve all aspects of our service so would also welcome candidates with qualifications and / or interests in teaching, research, patient safety, quality improvement, management and leadership or bedside ultrasound. We actively encourage flexibility and diversity of interests in our team; existing consultants are supported in a range of special interests and roles including Maternity Medicine, Toxicology, bedside ultrasound, post graduate medical education and governance. We recognise that all recent trainees have a special interest or skill gained in training and we will incorporate these into the team as fully as possible. Special skills / interests and how these might be incorporated into the role and the wider Acute Medicine team can be discussed informally pre-interview. Clinical A full range of Acute Medicine emergency and elective patients are admitted to Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and the appointee will be responsible for the management of those patients admitted under their care. Provision with Consultant colleagues of a comprehensive elective and emergency Acute Medicine service. Provision of reciprocal cover for periods of leave. Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and the proper functioning of the department. These duties are subject to review from time to time in the light of the changing requirements of the service. If alterations to the described duties are required these will be mutually agreed between the appointee, their Consultant colleagues, and the Trust. The person appointed will be required to devote substantially the whole of their time to the duties of the post and give them priority at all times. Governance and Audit Each consultant is expected to take an active role in clinical governance activities including (but not restricted to) clinical audit, incident reporting, review of complaints, risk management, CPD and Evidence-Based Practice. Each specialty has a Consultant Clinical Governance lead. Teaching Both main campuses of the Trust are major centres for undergraduate and postgraduate education and teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to play a significant role in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. There are opportunities for formal, job planned time for Educational Supervision of Junior Doctors.
