Workstream 1:

Using machine learning (ML)-driven Urology Triage Platform (UTP) to help address the increased Urology referrals of an ageing population directly addresses two of the industry research grand challenges of AI -supported initiates and innovation to support an ageing population and is consistent with the NHS long term plan pledge of ‘digitally enabled’ outpatient care becoming mainstream. Our previous work with Demdx has demonstrated a ML technical and clinical Urology Triage Platform (UTP) with developed ML algorithms to optimise clinical pathways can be potentially trained to a range of supervised learning models using a combination of SNOMED symptoms and anonymised past medical records as the independent variables and the diagnosis as the dependent variable.

Workstream 2: Understanding Barriers to AI Care

Guy's and St Thomas' renal and transplant service is a centre of excellence for the treatment of kidney disease. Clinical services are centred at Guy's with outreach services offered on a number of sites in south east London and Kent. We offer treatment at all stages, including: early diagnosis, care for advanced kidney disease, including dialysis, kidney transplantation and end of life care. We have the largest and most active living kidney donation programme in the UK. Urology is a surgical speciality, covering the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate and male reproductive organs. We deliver various types of research studies in the directorate.

Duties and Responsibilities

Contribute to the development, training, and validation of ML models by preparing structured datasets derived from anonymised patient records and SNOMED-coded symptoms, in accordance with project protocols.
Support the technical write-up of model development and results for internal reports, academic publications, and future research grant applications, ensuring high standards of accuracy and data integrity.
Liaise with the wider multidisciplinary research team, including data scientists and urology clinicians, to coordinate project timelines and workflow for the UTP.

Assist in planning and delivering the deployment of the AI-UTP model across other clinical centres, including the preparation of relevant documentation, user training, and model testing at site level.
Conduct a systematic literature review to evaluate current evidence on barriers and facilitators to AI-based care in urology and contribute to publications arising from this work.

Support the organisation and facilitation of qualitative interviews and focus groups with clinicians and patients to explore attitudes towards AI-based triage systems and identify concerns or adoption challenges.
Work in close collaboration with GSTT AI Team to ensure that qualitative and quantitative data is appropriately analysed, interpreted, and prepared for publication.

Ensure that all data handling complies with GDPR, NHS Digital transparency standards, and local research governance policies, maintaining strict confidentiality at all times.

Communicate complex or technical information about research protocols and findings effectively with internal stakeholders, clinical teams, and external collaborators, both verbally and in writing.

Attend team meetings, contribute to discussions on AI innovation in urology, and support the preparation of presentations for national and international conferences and stakeholder briefings.
