Summary
Job Description
As Tom’s support worker, you will assist him in accessing the community, participating in activities he enjoys, and building skills for independence. This role is centred on person-led support, helping Tom grow in confidence and thrive in a supportive, structured, and engaging environment.
We’re looking for a caring, reliable male support worker with a genuine interest in enabling young people with additional needs to flourish. You should be a good communicator with a warm, nurturing approach and the ability to promote confidence, independence, and self-esteem. You’ll need to be organised, patient, and mindful of Tom’s communication needs, time awareness, and sensitive to his autistic spectrum traits. A full driving licence is essential.
You will be working closely with Tom, encouraging him to explore new opportunities while supporting him to access the community safely and with enjoyment.

Roles and Responsibilities
● Support Tom to safely access the community, including parks, shops, and cultural or social events.
● Encourage and assist with using public transport to build travel confidence and awareness.
● Provide support during activities such as gardening, music, walking, and visiting places of interest.
● Promote life skills including time awareness, routine, and basic daily living activities.
● Support positive social interaction and engagement in inclusive social environments.
● Use humour, patience, and emotional understanding to foster trust and a positive working relationship.
● Be aware of and responsive to Tom’s communication style and any autistic traits.
● Maintain consistent boundaries and routines to help Tom feel safe and confident.
● Ensure a non-smoking, respectful, and supportive working environment.
● Drive Tom to activities where appropriate, ensuring safe transport and vehicle suitability.
● Communicate regularly with Tom’s family to provide feedback, raise concerns, or share successes.
Specific Requirements
● Male (due to personal care and suitability requirements)
● Driver with full, clean driving licence
● Experience of working with young people with learning disabilities and/or autism
● Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to use simple, clear language
● Caring, patient, respectful and nurturing approach
● Sense of humour, emotionally warm, and reliable
● Awareness of social and communication needs and autistic traits
● Ability to support community access, travel training, and daily living tasks
● Punctual, dependable and consistent
● Non-smoker
Desirable Criteria
● Shared interests in music, nature, dancing, gardening or exploring the outdoors
● Relevant training or background in care, support work, or special education
● Willingness to work flexibly, including occasional weekends or evenings
