Background

The Student Governance Team, within Academic Registry, plays a vital role in enhancing the student experience and supporting continuous improvement across the University by maintaining clear and transparent policies across key student-facing processes, including Student Complaints, Academic Appeals, Student Conduct, Academic Misconduct, and Fitness to Practise. The Team conducts thorough and objective investigations to support fair, evidence-based decision-making and resolution.

We are excited to be recruiting a Student Investigations Officer to join the Student Governance Team. This is an excellent opportunity to play a pivotal role in fostering a safe, respectful and inclusive University community. Your work will directly support the University in meeting its regulatory responsibilities and upholding the highest standards of conduct, integrity and accountability.

In this role, you will take personal responsibility for conducting timely and effective investigations involving student complaints and student disciplinary issues, including but not limited to sexual misconduct and harassment. You will plan and undertake interviews with students and staff, gather and assess evidence, and produce clear and factual investigation outcomes with well-reasoned recommendations. You will also attend disciplinary hearings in your capacity as the formal investigator.

In addition to managing investigations, you will provide expert advice and guidance to colleagues across the University on Student Governance procedures and policies. You will also support the development of investigative guidance materials, templates and training. With an in-depth understanding of relevant legal and regulatory frameworks, you will champion best practice across the University and contribute to the continuous improvement of the service.

Who are we looking for?

Someone keen to make a difference and contribute to the service and the wider university. You will have a strong sense of fairness, meticulous attention to detail, and a genuine commitment to supporting students and upholding ethical standards. Substantial investigative experience is essential, preferably within a higher education setting. You will be confident navigating complex and sensitive matters with diplomacy and discretion, and with a commitment to confidentiality.

You will have excellent decision-making skills and be able to assess complex legal and regulatory issues, make evidence-based recommendations and take full accountability for your decisions.

You will be highly organised, proactive, and capable of managing a large and varied caseload independently, using your initiative and problem-solving skills. You will be capable of meeting strict deadlines without compromising on quality or accuracy.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are also essential, enabling you to engage confidently and collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders across the University. This includes approaching challenging conversations, such as those involving decisions, remedies and constructive feedback, whilst maintaining clear boundaries and communicating with professionalism and empathy.

How will you work?

We are committed to supporting flexible methods of working wherever possible. On campus presence will be required and will vary, and will align with the needs of the service, our students, staff and stakeholders.
