About The Team:

SRUC (Scotland’s Rural College) is a specialist higher education institution delivering tertiary education, research and consultancy. SRUC’s principal purpose is to advance education, science, research, and environmental protection and improvement in rural and land-based industries, both domestically and internationally.

The Research Operations and Strategy (ROS) group support SRUC’s aim to deliver high-quality challenge focussed findings to help understand and transform the world.

As well as monitoring and providing strategic direction for SRUC research, Research Operations and Strategy provides advice and services for colleagues in the Schools, Veterinary Services and SAC Consultancy to support excellent research and project delivery. This includes;

  • Embedding and making the most of our research management information system
  • Quality assurance and financial modelling
  • Maximising the success within the research landscape
  • Doctoral College - students and supervisors
  • Quality Assurance and contractual support in our research and commercial delivery
  • Supporting and enhancing our research culture and environment at SRUC
  • Research reporting, monitoring and auditing including with funders, internally and institutional reporting including Research Excellence Framework, HESA, SFC and rankings

    The Opportunity:

    SRUC is seeking a proactive and knowledgeable Research Funding Development Officer to play a key role in supporting our research ambitions. This post is central to generating external income through the development and submission of high-quality grant applications and contract proposals.

    You will provide expert advice to Principal Investigators (PIs), ensuring applications meet funder requirements and internal SRUC policies. The role involves close collaboration with academics, professional services, external funders, and partners to develop competitive bids.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Advise PIs on funder requirements and ensure timely, compliant submissions
    • Develop accurate costings and budgets for applications
    • Coordinate internal approvals (ethics, finance, governance, contracts)
    • Support funding applications including large-scale and international collaborative bids
    • Maintain accurate records in the research information system (Pure)
    • Deliver training and write guidance on funding processes
    • Liaise with external partners and provide post-award support as needed

      To succeed in this role, you’ll bring proven experience in drafting and submitting research funding bids—ideally within a research-intensive higher education institution. You’ll be well-versed in the terms and conditions of standard research contracts and have a solid understanding of the tools, frameworks, and processes used by major research and commercial funders.

      You will also have hands-on experience coordinating and managing complex projects, including large-scale collaborative bids—preferably with international partners—and/or substantial commercial or consultancy-based projects experience.

This role is hybrid on a non-contractual basis, with preferred office time to be at SRUC Kings Buildings, Peter Wilson Building, West Mains Road, Edinburgh, EH9 3JG preferred, though there may be an option to be based at another SRUC campus.

      Minimum Qualifications:

      The ideal candidate will possess, at minimum, a degree qualification (SCQF Level 9), preferably in a discipline aligned with SRUC’s area of work.
