Summary

A Vacancy at Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

This is an exciting opportunity to work within a multidisciplinary team providing a one-stop breast service at Bedford. Bedford Hospital has merged with Luton and Dunstable Hospital and as a result, opportunities for training exist across the sites. As a Speciality doctor in Breast Surgery, you would develop skills in assessment and management of benign and malignant breast disease and would work with two consultants and a specialist doctor to deliver high quality care, predominantly at the Bedford site. Previous experience in breast disease management would be advantageous. The unit treats 250 cancers per year including screen-detected patients (referred from the Beds and Herts Breast screening unit).

Radiology support with mammography, ultrasound and biopsy and urgent Breast MRI service is available. Non-wire localisation is performed with LOCaliser clips, sentinel node biopsy with dual technique and intraoperative specimen x-ray is available.

The Bedford unit offers both immediate and delayed breast reconstruction in conjunction with a plastic surgery team. At Luton immediate breast reconstruction (implant or LD), perforator flap partial reconstruction and mammoplasty is performed. The successful application would attend breast lists at Bedford, but would also be able to incorporate Luton breast lists and Bedford plastic lists into their schedule. There would also be an opportunity for breast ultrasound training at Luton if desired.

The oncology unit is on site and we have experienced oncologist working between Bedford and Cambridge (Addenbrooke’s Hospital). We actively participate in research and are involved in national trials.

Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides hospital services to a growing population of around 700,000 people living across Bedfordshire and the surrounding areas across two busy hospital sites in Bedford and Luton. Both hospital sites offer key services such as A&E, Obstetrics-led Maternity and Paediatrics. You will be joining a friendly, high performing Trust committed to ensuring the health and wellbeing of staff. As one of the largest NHS Trusts in our region you will have access to a programme of high quality training and development to help you grow your career. The Trust continues to be committed to delivering the best patient care using the best clinical knowledge and technology.

Please review all documents attached to ensure you familiarize yourself with all requirements of the job.

The successful candidate will work for 2 consultant Breast and general surgeons (Mr Charfare and Mr Muttalib). You would have a chance to learn management of Breast cancer, including the diagnosis and surgical treatment for screen detected and symptomatic patients. You will be working for the Breast firm and would provide a one-stop Breast service and carry out breast surgery, initially under supervision. The increased number of referrals and the need to see such referrals urgently will require some flexibility with your weekly schedule, which would be a combination of clinic, theatre sessions, administration and MDTs.Some provision of ward rounds as needed would be required. Ward rounds consist of reviewing assessing and planning management and investigations for in patients. In addition ward duties will consist of leading and teaching the junior doctors in the team.

The successful applicant would have the opportunity to pursue further personal developments depending on their needs/wishes. These include: attendance at Plastic surgery lists with the team led by Professor Hindocha at Bedford, general and laparoscopic skills in hernia/gall bladder surgery with Mr Charfare, Oncoplastic breast surgical training at Luton and Breast Ultrasound Training at Luton.

You will attend both Breast consultants’ theatre lists at Bedford, (minimum of 2 lists per week). You will have consultant delivered training in theatre and will perform tasks, procedures and operations according to your level of expertise.

In addition you will have your own patient list in clinic. These are not always supervised by the attending consultant.
