Based in Southampton, the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) is an independent organisation within the Department for Transport. The Branch is responsible for investigating accidents and incidents involving UK vessels anywhere in the world, and any vessels within UK territorial waters, with the aim of improving the safety of life at sea and the avoidance of accidents in the future.

The postholder will have a key role in the running of the MAIB. They will provide finance management support to the Branch. The Finance Manager needs to have a good overall appreciation of the DfT’s procurement policies from purchase to pay. They will also monitor MAIBs financial performance, maintaining all necessary financial systems and analysing data to inform senior management.
Part of the role will be to assist the Business Support with administrative tasks, such as setting up meetings, information management and general office admin.
No two days are the same in this fast-moving operational environment and you will face challenges on a regular basis.

Your responsibilities will include, but aren’t limited to:
- Budget and Finance - profiling of the budget to ensure that sufficient funds are allocated to individual areas of work. Is responsible for the production of a monthly forecast of expenditure.
- Procurement - Support the Inspectorate and Business Support Manager to facilitate the administration of any contract issued on the procurement of goods and services
- Purchase orders - responsible for this end-to-end process
- Invoice payment – Responsible for liaising with the requestor to ensure all goods and services were delivered as agreed, and processing all invoices within prompt government payment targets.
- MAIIF – Act as treasurer for the Marine Accident Investigators’ Forum and will liaise with Chief Inspector to ensure all countries invoices are paid and produce an annual audit report.
- Receipts – Payments of any nature made to the MAIB for work carried out are to be paid into the appropriate DfT bank account.
- General administrative duties – Responsible for the provision of general administrative support to the Head of Business
