Summary
School of Architecture – Environmental Architecture MA
The Royal College of Art is the world’s leading postgraduate university of art and design. Located in the heart of London, the College is internationally renowned for its teaching and research excellence, and for nurturing creative and critical practice at the highest levels.
The School of Architecture is seeking to appoint an Associate Lecturer (Seminar Teaching, 0.2 FTE) to join the MA Environmental Architecture programme. This fixed-term role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to an internationally recognised postgraduate course at the intersection of spatial design, climate justice, and ecological theory.
The MA Environmental Architecture is a design-led, project-based programme that prepares students to tackle urgent environmental challenges through spatial practices grounded in interdisciplinary research, fieldwork, and political engagement. Our seminar teaching component is central to the intellectual life of the programme, equipping students with critical frameworks and diverse knowledge systems to examine the climate and ecological crisis.
The Role
The Associate Lecturer will be responsible for contributing to the delivery of seminar teaching, including leading group discussions, supervising individual research development, and collaborating with the wider programme team to shape and maintain a rigorous, inclusive, and experimental learning environment.
We are seeking candidates with experience teaching at postgraduate level, ideally within architecture or related fields, and with a deep understanding of the political, social, and ecological dimensions of environmental transformation. You will engage students in critical discussions around climate justice, environmental theory, and emerging ecological pedagogies.
Key Areas of Focus
You will contribute to seminar content exploring themes such as:
Environmental history, science, and contemporary environmental jurisprudence (e.g. ecocide, rights of nature, biocultural rights)
Non-Western environmental knowledge systems
Social and political impacts of climate change, including racial and gender inequality
Interdisciplinary and experimental ecological thought, including decolonial ecologies, more-than-human perspectives, ecofeminism, and ecosophy
The successful candidate will support a diverse student body and bring a commitment to inclusive, critical education that addresses real-world environmental challenges.
Person Specification
We are looking for candidates with:
A strong interest in and experience of ecological and environmental pedagogies
The ability to situate teaching practice within broader social, political, and academic contexts
Experience teaching seminar-based content in architecture or related disciplines, at undergraduate or postgraduate level
A track record of research or teaching related to environmental transformation, climate justice, and interdisciplinary ecological themes
Experience in one-to-one and group teaching formats, with a commitment to accessible and inclusive education
A demonstrated commitment to equality of opportunity and the ability to work harmoniously with students from diverse backgrounds
This is a 0.2 FTE, fixed-term position, ideal for a practitioner, researcher, or academic seeking to contribute meaningfully to a leading postgraduate programme in environmental design.
