As the Design Manager, you will lead and manage the design development within each DNO for the capital programme. Your responsibilities will include developing, implementing, and overseeing the delivery of designs across various projects and portfolios from initial feasibility through development, construction, and commissioning. You will manage and lead your design teams, including performance management, employee engagement, team briefings, and career development.
You will be accountable for ensuring design solutions meet technical requirements, are constructible and operable within our operational safety rules. You will provide managerial and technical leadership in developing solutions and leading on the technical interface with external design organizations. You will assess cost/benefit trade-offs of design solutions and support the technical decision-making processes, identify areas for technological advancement while maintaining excellent engineering standards, and seek design optimization through the development of repeatable design solutions, the adoption of digital solutions, and new technology.
In this role, you will also identify and deploy the technical skills, resource levels, and systems to deliver projects, including the engagement of external resources as required. You will develop new documents, procedures, and programmes for design as needed, and ensure compliance with CDM and UK Power Networks Health and Safety policies.
To qualify for this role, you must have a degree level or equivalent in engineering or science, significant experience as a designer and in a design management position, and experience in power system studies, protection systems, cable, civil and overhead line design. You should possess excellent report-writing skills, organizational and people management skills, and knowledge of Construction Design and Management Regulations. A full driving license is essential.
If you are a Chartered Member of a professional body such as the IET, have a qualification or relevant experience in project management, experience in electrical infrastructure design, construction, operations, and maintenance, or a safety management qualification such as IOSH/NEBOSH certificate or equivalent, it will be an added advantage.
