A Vacancy at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.


You will be required to provide emergency general surgery service in a 1 in 10 rota, which includes working as Surgeon of the Week, split into separate period of weekends and weekdays. During the week separate 12 hours shifts to cover overnight is provided by another consultant colleague, again on a 1 in 10 basis. During this period the candidate is expected to do daily ward rounds, review all emergency admissions and manage them both medically and surgically. There is a CEPOD theatre covered by a consultant anaesthetist. There is an excellent critical care team which runs a large recently opened combined critical care unit. There is a critical care outreach team. A surgical assessment unit is fully staffed and the junior doctors are based there when on call. The successful candidate would be expected to provide a full range of laparoscopic and open surgical procedures. There are senior surgeons willing to mentor and assist when needed. The trust in also considering a business case to commence a robotic surgical program in the near future, in collaboration with colleagues from other surgical specialities including the regional cardiothoracic surgical unit based at Blackpool.

This job description contains an indicative and proposed job plan to allow you to start work. Within 3 months you and your clinical manager will have agreed a prospective Job Plan that sets out your main duties and responsibilities, a schedule for carrying out your Programmed Activities, your managerial responsibilities, your accountability arrangements, your objectives and supporting resources.



You and your clinical manager will review the Job Plan annually in line with the provisions in Schedule 3 of the Terms and Conditions of the New Consultant Contract (England) 2003. Either may propose amendment of the job plan. You will help ensure through participating in Job Plan reviews that your Job Plan meets the criteria set out in the Terms and Conditions and that it contributes to the efficient and effective use of NHS resources.



The job plan includes 8.5 programmed activities for direct clinical care and on-call duties and 1.5 programmed activities for supporting professional activities. There are therefore 10 programmed activities in total. Non-fixed half days include clinical assessment of ward referrals / administration / audit / CME / research and teaching. On call is Category B on a 1 in 10 rota giving a 3% uplift in salary.

The Blackpool Teaching Hospital serves a resident population of approximately 330,000. There are large seasonal fluctuations in population with Blackpool and surrounding areas of the Fylde coast attracting up to 16 million visitors a year. The Hospital is a District Teaching General Hospital with 849 beds and serves the three surrounding boroughs of Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde. On-site is the Lancashire Cardiac Centre, a £52 million development, which opened in July 2006. This has six cardiology teams, six cardiothoracic teams, three dedicated cardiac theatres, 14 critical care beds and 89 ward beds. In July 2011, the Trust’s new Surgical Unit opened, which accommodates all elective and non-elective theatres, including three Day case theatres sited within a dedicated floor and unit. The Surgical Unit also features a dedicated urology unit and space for pre-operative assessments. The successful applicant will be based at Blackpool Teaching Hospital working within the Trust’s £39 million Surgical Unit, which opened in July 2011, comprising in-patient and day-case theatre floors and elective wards. You will join a team of Nine general surgeons with varying interests in either Colorectal, benign upper GI and/or emergency general surgery, to provide an elective and emergency general surgical service for the Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre population.

The Surgical Unit has seen a change in the theatre schedule, were practicable, the same anaesthetic is scheduled to work with the same surgeon throughout the full theatre lists. Morning operating theatres lists start at 8.00am and are scheduled to finish at 5.30 pm.

Morning OPD clinics start at 9am usually finishing at 1pm. Afternoon OPD clinics start at 1.30pm usually finishing at 5.30 pm.

The Trust operates a ‘Surgeon of the Week’ on-call model, which means that the same surgeon is on-call for the following time periods. The ON CALL works on a 1 in 10 basis. The surgeon on call covers the weekend and hand over on Monday morning to another colleague who continues the on-call for the rest of the week, when this surgeon covers the day for a period of 12 hours. The night cover is done in turn by colleagues.



· Friday 8am – Monday 8am

· Monday 8am – Friday 8am (separated from weekend on-call period)

A weekday night on-call schedule occurs for the four weekday nights from 8pm – 8am

Consultants haveno responsibility for any other clinical commitmentsduring their on-call week, enabling all time to be spent undertaking the management of emergency patients, reviewing patients admitted in both the Surgical Assessment Unit, emergency wards and undertaking non-elective surgery.
