Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Ward Leader to join an established team on Aspull Ward on the Wigan Hospital site.
Aspull ward is a 28 bedded orthopaedic trauma ward. We are looking to appoint a Ward Leader who will be a positive role model and who can contribute to the trusts delivery of fundamentals of care.
The post holder will act as a role model to all team members in the delivery of a high standard of evidenced based nursing care. They will utilise effective management and leadership skills in the operational management of ward/area/department. They will be responsible for the management of all staff in the area from the selection and recruitment of staff to managing their personal and professional development.
They will act as a role model and mentor to staff and students in establishing a positive learning environment where staff can develop to their full potential and work in conjunction with the Head of Nursing/Midwifery/Senior AHP Lead and matron to implement the recommendations of the strategy for nurses, midwives and AHPs.
The post holder will need to be a highly motivated Registered Nurse with significant relevant post registration experience. You will need to demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a driving passion and determination to ensuring that quality and safety of patient care and experience is paramount.
The post holder will demonstrate key leadership and management skills and will be responsible for providing clinical and professional leadership to the ward team. The post holder must have the skills needed to engage, inspire and motivate staff in the clinical area and a passion to initiate and sustain new innovative ways of working.

• The post holder will participate in, and influence, care delivery by: Leading the team in providing evidence based nursing/midwifery care ensuring that care is assessed, planned, implemented and evaluated utilising a patient centred approach to care.
• To be responsible for reviewing and updating nursing care plans and documentation.
• To co-ordinate nursing activity in the ward environment and ensuring the smooth operational running of the ward.
• To ensure that there are adequate staffing levels and appropriate skill mix to meet the needs of the ward.
• To ensure patient care is of a high standard.
• To facilitate regular meetings with staff in order to encourage the exchange and implementation of new ideas.
• To recognise and respond appropriately to situations which require immediate action.
• To deputise for the matron and participate in senior nurse rota.
• To ensure performance standards are met in accordance with agreed objectives.
• To manage effectively the use of allocated resources/funding.
• To lead the ward team in the management of ward environment in order to meet Trust objectives for Risk Management and Health & Safety.
• To manage own workload autonomously.
• To ensure that effective communication has been established with all disciplines, patients and relatives. Communicate very sensitive and distressing information to patients and their families. Ability to assess and advise patients in crisis situations and ensure that their needs are met by the whole team.
• To enable and supports colleagues in developing effective communication skills particularly in difficult situations.
• To act a resource of professional knowledge for the multi-disciplinary team, patients and relatives through application of theory in practice.
• To participate in management of complaints and patient concerns at ward level referring to relevant departments when appropriate.
• To lead patient and public involvement in the ward area leading to service improvement.
• To promote high standards of record keeping in accordance with professional, legal and organisational guidance, ensuring nurses/midwives understand their relevance and the nature of confidentiality.
