Perfect Household Staff is delighted to present a rare and rewarding opportunity for an experienced Head Housekeeper to join a distinguished literary retreat in Midlothian, Scotland. Established to provide a serene environment where creative professionals can focus on their work without interruption, this retreat operates for 10 months of the year and hosts up to six writers at a time, with residencies lasting four weeks each.

This is a permanent, full-time, live-out role offering stability alongside a manageable workload. You will be actively engaged approximately 24–25 weeks annually, working in line with scheduled residency sessions. During these periods, the property operates at full capacity, while the remainder of the year is spent maintaining the house in a standby state, with minimal demands on your time.

Position Details:

Position Type: Permanent, Full-Time, Live-Out

Working Days/Hours: 5 shifts per week, 7:30am – 3:30pm (with a 1-hour break), rota-based during residencies

Location: Midlothian, Scotland

Salary: £36,000 gross per annum

Start Date: ASAP

Driving: Not essential

Accommodation: Not provided

Uniform: Not required – smart, tidy presentation expected

Key Responsibilities:

Lead all daily housekeeping operations and uphold impeccable standards of cleanliness and presentation throughout the property

Supervise and coordinate a small team comprising:

1 Housekeeper

1 Head Cook

1 Assistant Cook

Prepare guest rooms and communal spaces before and during each residency period

Conduct general housekeeping and light cleaning across all internal areas

Manage housekeeping stock, supplies, and inventories

Oversee basic kitchen organisation and liaise with kitchen staff to ensure seamless delivery of meals and supplies

Receive deliveries and assist with preparations for special events and guest arrivals

Candidate Requirements:

Minimum of 3–5 years’ experience in a similar private household or high-end hospitality setting

Previous supervisory or team-leading experience strongly preferred

Eligibility to work in the UK

Strong professional references

Excellent time management, organisational, and communication skills

High level of discretion, integrity, and respect for confidentiality

Ability to work harmoniously within a small, professional team
