Post Title: Research Fellow
SBU/Department: School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science, Department of Physics, Astronomy and Mathematics
FTE: 1.0 FTE (working 37 hours per week)
Duration of Contract: Fixed Term for 29 months
Salary: UH7 £38,249 pa with potential to progress to £45,413 pa by annual increments
Annual Leave: 35 days plus standard public holidays and an additional 4 days including the closure of our office between Christmas and New Year
Location: College Lane Campus, Hatfield

Main duties and responsibilities
You will be expected to pursue your own independent research programme in theoretical physics within the scope of the project "From geometry to scattering amplitudes", leading to the publication of research outputs including refereed publications in recognised journals. You are also expected to be open to collaborative projects with other members of the MTP research group, and to contribute to the positive and productive working atmosphere within the group by, for example, helping with the running of seminar series and journal clubs. You may have the opportunity to undertake some light teaching duties as part of your general academic development.

Skill and experience required
You should have proven experience working in a research environment and a record of scholarly work such as published work in peer reviewed journals. You will have good IT skills and knowledge of research methodology appropriate for the subject area and knowledge of appropriate databases for the discipline and ability to conduct literature searches in the discipline using appropriate electronic resources.

You will have research experience in the subject area including, as appropriate, collaborative partnerships with other HEI’s or external partners, and experience of presenting research findings such as contributions to conferences and symposia at a local and national level. You must be able to plan and manage your own activities effectively with a methodical approach and attention to detail. You will have good oral and written communication skills in both spoken and written English, supported by excellent interpersonal and presentation skills and good time management.

You will be able to deal with sensitive material with strict confidentiality, be flexible and adaptable to team and workload requirements demonstrating initiative and the ability to learn new skills. It is essential that you are effective in a team setting.

Qualifications required
You will be educated with an undergraduate degree (or equivalent qualification) in a relevant discipline. You will hold a PhD (or equivalent qualification) or be close to completion of a PhD (no more than 3 months prior to viva) in a relevant discipline, or equivalent experience.
