Summary
The Pipe Fitter plays a critical hands-on role in delivering high-quality mechanical installations across a range of projects. This role requires a skilled and experienced tradesperson capable of working independently or supervising mates and apprentices on site. The Pipe Fitter is expected to install mechanical systems to specification, maintain high standards of workmanship and safety, and contribute positively to team performance and site operations.
Working under the guidance of a Mechanical Project Manager, the Pipe Fitter will also take ownership of site-based responsibilities, from reading and following RAMS to managing materials, collaborating with stakeholders, and maintaining tools and equipment.
Key Responsibilities
Installation and Site Execution
Carry out the installation of mechanical pipework systems, including heating, chilled, hot and cold water, and drainage services.
Mount mechanical equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s Installation, Operation and Maintenance manuals (IOMs).
Interpret and follow detailed mechanical drawings, specifications, and installation standards.
Identify and report any design issues or required variations to the project or design team.
Supervision and Team Leadership
Supervise mates and apprentices on site, ensuring tasks are delegated effectively and safety and quality standards are maintained.
Monitor the work of subcontractors carrying out mechanical installations to ensure compliance with project requirements.
Support the development and mentoring of apprentices through hands-on training and guidance.
Health, Safety and Compliance
Ensure that all RAMS (Risk Assessments and Method Statements) are read, understood, and adhered to prior to undertaking any tasks.
Ensure RAMS are updated where required to reflect evolving or site-specific conditions.
Promote and maintain safe working practices at all times, reporting any incidents, near misses, or hazards promptly.
Contribute to site audits, safety briefings, and toolbox talks.
Material and Equipment Management
Manage materials on site, including taking receipt of deliveries, checking against orders, and storing securely and appropriately.
Upload delivery notes and materials documentation to DocuWare or equivalent document control system.
Ensure day-to-day maintenance of tools and work vehicles, reporting any defects or servicing needs to the relevant manager.
Quality Assurance
Work to a high standard of accuracy and finish, ensuring installations are in line with project and regulatory specifications.
Perform self-checks and inspections during installation, reporting any quality issues or improvements.
Communication and Stakeholder Engagement
Liaise professionally with clients, contractors, and other site stakeholders to support effective coordination and site progress.

Housekeeping and Site Discipline
Maintain clean and tidy work areas, ensuring waste is managed correctly and pathways remain clear.
Participate in site-based initiatives for cleanliness, safety, and operational efficiency.
Key Skills & Competencies
Proven experience in commercial or industrial pipe fitting roles, ideally within MEP or building services environments.
Competent in reading mechanical drawings and understanding technical specifications.
Strong awareness and understanding of health and safety procedures and site requirements.
Ability to supervise junior team members and coordinate with other trades.
Skilled in managing materials and using digital tools (e.g., DocuWare, tablets) for documentation.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Practical problem-solving mindset and strong attention to detail.
Holds valid trade qualifications (e.g., NVQ Level 2/3 in Mechanical Installation or equivalent).
Valid CSCS card and full UK driving licence.
