The University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) is a world-class research and innovation institution, working with industrial partners to develop new manufacturing techniques, technologies, and processes. The AMRC Composite Centre is at the forefront of this mission, driving innovation in composite materials and manufacturing for high-value sectors such as aerospace, defence, nuclear, and automotive. We are seeking a dynamic and visionary Head of Operations to lead our Composite Centre, ensuring its continued growth, impact, and operational excellence.
This is a pivotal leadership role for an individual passionate about advanced manufacturing and eager to shape the future of composites. As Head of Operations, you will be instrumental in providing strategic direction, overseeing the Centre's capabilities, and ensuring the successful delivery of cutting-edge research and industrial projects. You will be responsible for translating strategic vision into tangible outcomes, fostering a culture of innovation, and maintaining the Centre's position as a global leader.
We are seeking a highly accomplished individual with a proven track record in a demanding, experimentally intensive research or industrial environment. Your expertise will encompass:
● Deep Industrial and Technical Acumen: You will possess extensive industrial knowledge of Composite Centre processes, including critical manufacturing techniques and relevant quality standards across diverse industries such as aerospace, defence and green energy. Your ability to understand and sequence complex tasks to achieve desired objectives will be paramount.
● Strategic Leadership and Project Management: You will demonstrate proven leadership in research projects, evidenced by an extensive portfolio and experience in securing and managing funding from diverse sources, including Catapult, Innovate UK (IUK), and the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI). Substantial project management experience in an engineering or research organization is essential, including strategic decision-making and a keen consideration of financial impact, resourcing, scope, and timeframes for large programs.
● Exceptional Stakeholder Engagement and Business Development: Your role demands exceptional client-facing and customer service experience across all business levels. You will have a strong track record in business development, with a demonstrable ability to instil confidence in partners and deliver measurable value from their engagements. Proven capabilities in stakeholder management practices are crucial for fostering strong, collaborative relationships.
● Inspirational Team Leadership and Communication: You will be adept at motivating, communicating with, and leading both individual teams and multiple teams within your responsible area. Highly effective written and verbal communication skills are critical, including comprehensive report writing, delivering impactful presentations, and articulating the organization's strategic plan and individual contributions to staff at all levels.
● Analytical Problem-Solving and Long-Term Vision: You will possess advanced analytical and creative problem-solving skills, coupled with a robust appreciation for longer-term implications. Your ability to foresee challenges and develop innovative solutions will be key to the Centre's sustained success.
● Operational Excellence: You will be proficient in IT skills across the Microsoft Office suite, including Microsoft Project, to a high standard, ensuring efficient operational management.
