Summary


An exciting opportunity to work within the Lung Cancer directorate at Wythenshawe hospital as a member of the thoracic biopsy team as a band 6 specialist nurse.

You will need to be flexible, a team player, lead in the absence of the senior nurse and able to demonstrate a commitment to professional development and evidence based practice.

You will be supporting a 5 day a week biopsy service and will be responsible for assisting in CT and Ultrasound thoracic biopsies.

The CT lung biopsy service is a diagnostic service that predominantly provides CT guided lung biopsies but also perform CT guided pleural/mediastinal biopsies and US guided biopsies of lung nodules, pleural nodules, mediastinal masses and lymph nodes. We are currently based in the Bronchoscopy unit in the North West Lung Centre however we are due to move to a brand new purpose built modular building in summer 2025.

The majority of our patients are internal from the lung screening programme and rapid hub. We also receive referrals from other hospitals within Greater Manchester and Cheshire as we are a specialist site for thoracic biopsies.

You may also be asked to help the wider lung cancer team.

1 x 12 month secondment position 37.5 hours per week

Please note this role will involve wearing a lead apron when in the CT scanner room for radiation protection, which may be physically demanding due to its weight.

Admit and recover patients undergoing CT and ultrasound guided biopsies.

Assist in procedure room with a band 5 RN and radiologist.

You will be the senior nurse in charge in the absence of the band 7 senior biopsy nurse.

You will need to be able to manage complications such as pneumothorax or haemoptysis post procedure.

Undertake comprehensive health care needs assessment of patients, reassessing as appropriate.

Assess, plan, prioritise implement and evaluate nursing interventions to meet the patient needs.

Contribute to the organisation of multi-disciplinary, patient centred care.

Facilitate and encourage patients, carers and relatives to take an active role in care given.

Undertake duties sensitive to the needs of patients/carers and relatives from multi-cultural background.

Contribute to the development of professional nursing standards.

Contribute to the multi-disciplinary team in discharge planning, undertake nurse led discharge post procedures (training support provided).

Demonstrate the mandatory competencies of the Unit and the Trust, attending all required mandatory updates.

Ensure that patient’s emotional and psychological needs are effectively addressed.

Develop and demonstrate a working knowledge of effective multi-disciplinary teamwork and the role of individual team members.

Incorporate health education and health promotion within clinical practice.
