Summary

Oxford Lifelong Learning is seeking to appoint a Casual Kitchen Porter to join our friendly and supportive catering team at Rewley House.

About the role
In this busy role, you will be responsible for maintaining high standards of cleanliness in our kitchen and service areas, including cleaning catering equipment, kitchen tools, and general workspaces.

Working hours will vary from 0 and 36.5 hours per week. The Department is particularly busy from June through October, with shifts mainly in the evenings (6pm – 9:30pm) and occasional daytime or weekend work.

The role
The overall purpose of the role is to maintain the cleanliness of the kitchen areas, and equipment in the catering areas and assist the Chefs and waiting staff in serving the Department’s clients. The kitchen operates over seven days and the Kitchen Porter’s shifts will be to cover the evenings and a day of the weekend. The Kitchen Porter reports to the Head Chef.

Catering Operation
The catering operation takes place mainly at Rewley House, which is the Department for Continuing Education’s main site. A breakfast and lunch service is provided on a daily basis. Dinner on average three times per week, depending on business requirements. Business levels are higher over the Summer until October.

Responsibilities
General Duties
· Wash and clean kitchen equipment, restaurant service china, cutlery and glassware, including use of dish washing machines.

· Polish cutlery and glassware.

· Take responsibility to ensure all areas of the kitchen are cleaned on a regular basis and that the overall cleanliness of the kitchen is to a high standard.

· Ensure good cleanliness and care of industrial cleaning equipment (dishwasher and pot washer) in kitchen.

· Prepare rubbish and recycling, compacting cardboard and ensuring all rubbish is placed in the correct bin. Placing rubbish and recycling out in time for collection. Ensure cleaning chemicals in the dishwasher and Granuldisk (automated pot washer) are kept at the right levels.

· Assist with delivering catering to meeting rooms or external locations.

· Assist with moving furniture in the dining room.

· Assist or cover for waiting staff with front of house service in their absence or when requested to do so.

· Assist in the cleaning of the dining room, dusting areas, vacuuming, sweeping and cleaning floors.

· Put away chemical and food deliveries in the kitchen, ensure of good stock rotation.

· Use knowledge and experience of health and safety and cleaning standards to ensure that the kitchen and associated areas remain safe working areas for all.

· Report any issues and make recommendations to the Head Chef/Restaurant Manager on how to improve cleanliness, cleaning and organisation processes.

· Undertake vegetable preparation and some cooking duties to ensure efficient daily operation of the kitchen.

· Attend all staff meetings and training courses. Assist in ensuring the security of stores, cupboards and any other kitchen areas.

· Be flexible to assist in other areas of cleaning in the premises, such as housekeeping, sweeping of courtyard areas, gardening and snow clearing.

· Bring to the attention of the Head Chef any maintenance issues of the cleaning equipment in the kitchen, such as dishwasher or Granuldisk (automated pot washer).

· Assist the Head Chef in ordering cleaning products, including making recommendations on what should be ordered and when.

· Attend to any other reasonable requests by the Head Chef / Chefs, Restaurant Manager or management of the Department.

Health & Safety

· Adhere to company and legal requirements.

· Have good knowledge and adhere to hygiene systems and procedures in the catering operation.

· Ensure that standards of personal hygiene are followed at all times.

· Attend Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) and other courses.
