The Trust seeks to appoint a Consultant Anaesthetist with an interest in Neurosurgical Anaesthesia. This is a whole-time position, and the new appointee will share the caseload, facilities, and trainee grade support with the existing consultants. While the main intention of this position is to meet the requirements of Neurosurgical theatre’s there is the potential for the successful candidate to utilise the flexible theatre element of the rota to undertake Neuro IR theatre lists which does include a thrombectomy service all of which can be explored further at interview.

The post is whole time post of 10pa’s and offers 8.5 programmed activities (PAs), and 1.5 SPA.


The successful candidate will be expected to provide pre-operative assessment, anaesthesia, andfollow-up. He/she will be expected to introduce and apply new techniques asappropriateand totake a share of the general work of the department, including cover for consultant colleagueswherepractical.


The appointment is to the Trust, not to specific hospitals. The appointee will take his/her share ofclinical responsibilities within the Department of anaesthesia. This will include provision for perioperativeassessment. In addition to duties within sub-speciality, the appointee willbe requiredtoprovide anaesthesia for adult patients in all specialties asappropriate tohis/her training andexperience.


Develop a team with a strong emphasis on delivering a cross-site service.


Post-holders willbe requiredto work on each site.


Comply withyour agreed job plan, which is reviewed annually.


As a Consultant at BHRUT the post involves prospective on-call duties which attracts 1.25PAs with a5% uplift due to frequency of 1:10 with planned weekends which will include provision for adults aswell as neonatal to teenage patients. Theon-callis run in tandem with a second consultant due tothe 2 hospital sites and the on-call rotastipulateswhich site you cover on each date across the year.

We operate from two main sites – KGH in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two busy emergency departments with more than 330,000 people visiting them last year. We’re campaigning to secure the £35m we need to transform the A&E at Queen’sand get rid of corridor care.

Our patients are benefitting from our Women’s Health Hub in Ilford; an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch; and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and at St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hubin Hornchurch.

These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week and are providing an extra 94,000 scans a year.

The majority of our 8,000 staff – who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. Deputise in the absence of departmental colleagues in cases of annual leave and (wherepracticable)short-term sickness.


Contribute (in co-operation with the Audit Committee) on a regular basis to the clinical audit processundertaken within the Trust, and whereappropriate ata broader regional level.


Encourage andparticipateinappropriate researchinitiatives approved by the local EthicalCommittee. Experience in research and audit isadvantageous.


Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of current anaesthetic procedures.


Undertake administrative duties associated with the care of patients. Attend departmental meetings.


Support the Divisional Director, Specialty Leads and other professional colleagues in themanagement of the department to ensure the maintenance ofhigh standards,a good qualityofpatient care and the development of the service within the Clinical Governance framework.
