Summary
Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust is pleased to announce vacancy in this established role of Senior Fellow in Trauma and Knee Arthroplasty and Soft Tissue Knee Orthopaedic Surgery (Senior Knee Fellow). This post would suit a senior trainee looking increase depth of specialist knowledge and further operative skills looking to apply to a Consultant knee surgeon post. The post will support clinical exposure to key elective caseload and give opportunity to further experience in specialist knee trauma, whilst allowing participation in audit, teaching and research. Research is a focus, with several Knee Arthroplasty and Soft Tissue Knee projects ready to prepare and submit for poster, podium and research publication. The post-holders will have a named supervisor and be supported in undertaking scheduled educational opportunities within the Trust and specialties. An Introduction to the Division/Specialty Trauma and orthopaedic surgical services at Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust are delivered across 3 sites. We are a busy department treating over 550 hip fractures and undertaking approximately 1,200 hip and knee replacement procedures each year. This post has been developed as a training opportunity for registrars preferably before taking up a Consultant post or to work on a research or higher degree whilst gaining clinical experience. Head of Clinical Service, Mr James Newman oversees the day-to-day management of the department along with the Patient Service Manager and Assistant Patient Service Manager. The Trauma and Orthopaedics department is supported by the Elective lead, Mr Simon Jones, Trauma Lead, Mr Thomas Goff, and Paediatric Lead, Mrs Helen Bryant. Orthopaedics is under the Division of Surgery and the Head of Clinical Service reports to the Divisional Clinical Director. The fellow will have opportunity to work with the four Knee consultants and contribute to the activities of the wider team. Including MDT activity, regional network, and subspeciality fracture clinics. The Fellow will be expected to contribute to the research interests of the department and develop their own research/audit project within the foot and ankle unit for presentation/publication. There are several suitable projects ready to start, and it would be envisaged that this could strengthen consultant interview applications. The main duties of the post will include This post represents an exciting opportunity to join a group of dynamic Consultant Orthopedic Surgeons in providing a wide range of elective orthopedic services and trauma services to the population of approximately 400,000 in the Wakefield and Kirklees area of Yorkshire. Responsibility for the management of patients with acute and chronic conditions including complex cases. Referral of patients to other specialities as appropriate Out-patient activities/clinics Involvement in specialty and cross-specialty multi-disciplinary teams and meetings Involvement in relevant administration duties Teaching and supervision of junior medical staff and other clinicians as appropriate Involvement in audit and clinical governance including service improvement activities The above list is not intended to be exhaustive, and it is likely duties may be altered from time to time in the light of changing circumstances and after discussion with the post holder. Tenure The post is initially offered on a fixed term contract for 12 months after which there could be an extension on a mutually agreed basis. Pay Scale These roles are equivalent to a doctor on specialty training programmes and will be paid on the equivalent pay scale. The salary will be paid at £73,992 per annum. Mentoring Newly appointed senior medical staff will be offered mentoring opportunities either within the department or within the wider Trust and may be specified by the appointments committee. There is an induction and development programme for all new staff. Continuing Professional Development The Trust requires all its doctors to engage with continuing professional development, guided by the relevant professional associations or Royal Colleges. Time and funding is provided according to departmental and Trust policies, subject to approval through the clinical management structures. There is a programme of mandatory training which all relevant staff must complete as required. Teaching The Trust is keen to maintain its reputation for high quality training and to attract the highest calibre of trainee and career-grade doctors. All senior doctors are involved in training our doctors, students and other professions. There are many opportunities to develop training and education roles and many have taken on educational leadership roles within and beyond the Trust. Research Medical staff are encouraged to develop areas of personal and/or research interest. This can be developed in liaison with the Trusts R&D department and in line with prevailing policies and research frameworks. The Trust is developing an expanding and outward-looking research programme. Audit and Clinical Governance There is a rolling half-day clinical governance programme and audit meetings are well attended and lively. The Clinical Audit Department assists with setting and supporting an audit programme for the Service with which all colleagues are encouraged to engage. Clinical Audit is considered within objectives as part of job planning. Representation Our Senior Medical Staff Committee provides a forum to liaise with and advise our senior management team. The BMA-accredited Local Negotiating Committee negotiates on terms-and-conditions matters. General Conditions The post is advertised on a full time basis (although less than full time applicants will be considered) and on the basis of the prevailing national TCS and pay scales for this grade. These may be obtained from the NHS Employers website or provided upon request as well as details of joining the NHS Pension Scheme. The appointment is subject to satisfactory medical health clearance from the Trusts Occupational Health Department. The successful applicant may be required to undergo an examination prior to taking up appointment. The post is subject to an enhanced DBS clearance evidenced by the applicant. When on duty the postholder should remain contactable and able to reach attend the relevant clinical site within 30 minutes in normal traffic conditions (or more immediately available should clinical circumstances demand). This post is exempt from the provisions of section 4 (2) of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.
