The role:

A forward-thinking public sector organisation is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Traffic Engineer to join its Highways and Transportation team. This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a busy engineering design team delivering impactful and high-profile transport improvement schemes across the city.

You’ll support the delivery of infrastructure projects aligned with local and national transport strategies — from enhancing sustainable travel routes to improving accessibility and network safety.





Key Responsibilities:

Supporting the design and implementation of a range of highways and traffic engineering projects, including walking and cycling schemes, bus priority corridors, congestion management, and road safety initiatives.
Creating, modifying, and managing technical drawings using AutoCAD.
Assisting with the design and assessment of Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) and traffic calming measures in line with current legislation and guidance.
Gathering and interpreting survey data to inform designs and proposals.
Participating in meetings and collaborating with engineers, designers, and external stakeholders.
Ensuring all designs meet quality standards, technical specifications, and project objectives.





What the client is looking for:

Essential Skills & Experience:

Proficient in AutoCAD and confident producing technical drawings.
Understanding of highway design principles, road geometry, drainage, and traffic management.
Strong communication and collaboration skills.
Ability to prioritise, problem-solve, and contribute to multiple projects simultaneously.
Familiarity with relevant highway design standards and regulations.



Desirable:

Experience working with TROs or on local authority highway projects.
Previous involvement in sustainable transport or public realm improvement schemes.
