Summary

A Vacancy at Barking Havering and Redbridge Univ Hospitals NHS Trust.

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Consultant in Head & Neck Surgery with a specialist interest in Thyroid and Benign Head & Neck to join our dynamic and innovative ENT team. Our department provides a comprehensive, high-quality ENT service to a population of over 750,000 and is recognised as a leading centre for Head & Neck Surgery.
This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a multidisciplinary team that includes specialists in Otology, Rhinology, Endocrinology, Maxillofacial Surgery and Radiology. You will play a key role in delivering outpatient clinics, diagnostic services, and surgical interventions, with a focus on Thyroid, Benign Head & Neck, and cancer pathways.
We are looking for some with substantial experience in Thyroid & Benign Head & Neck Surgery who has the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team and lead service improvements.

Outpatient Services – Deliver outpatient clinics at Queen’s Hospital and peripheral sites, including the weekly Neck Lump Clinic.

Surgical Expertise – Perform benign and diagnostic cancer Head & Neck procedures, thyroid surgeries, and routine ENT operations. Manage complications and provide post-operative care.

Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Involvement – Active participation in Head & Neck MDT and Thyroid MDT meetings to ensure high-quality, collaborative patient care.

Clinical & Educational Leadership – Contribute to teaching, training, and mentoring junior doctors, as well as supporting clinical governance and service development.

On-Call Commitment – Participate in the emergency ENT on-call rota, providing specialist input when required.

Extensive organisational and management experience at the Cancer Alliance level, with a proven track record in optimising cancer pathways is desirable along with strong teaching and mentoring background, with experience in supervising junior doctors and trainees.

We’re an organisation that is getting better and better and our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we’re proud of and our patients are happy with. We’re no longer in special measures; we’ve opened two new theatres at our Elective Surgical Hub in King George Hospital (KGH); and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, was named the top CEO by the Health Service Journal in 2024.

We operate from two main sites – KGH in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two busy emergency departments with more than 330,000 people visiting them last year. We’re campaigning to secure the £35m we need to transform the A&E at Queen’s and get rid of corridor care.

Our patients are benefitting from our Women’s Health Hub in Ilford; an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch; and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and at St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub in Hornchurch.

These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week and are providing an extra 94,000 scans a year.

The majority of our 8,000 staff – who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. Many can work flexibly and more than 400 of them are on our Ofsted accredited apprenticeship programmes. We’re proud to be a London Living Wage employer.

We’re looking forward to introducing an electronic patient record that will be transformative for our staff and beneficial for our patients.

Why Join Us?
State-of-the-art facilities, including narrow band imaging (NBI) for early cancer detection, CO₂ Laser, 4K microscopes, and advanced endoscopy in theatres.
