Your role and responsibilities
As a Senior Engineer in our Transport Strategy team, you’ll lead a small group of Engineers and Technicians responsible for inspecting developer-funded highway schemes. You’ll ensure that all works meet national and Suffolk County Council design standards and specifications, and that records are accurately maintained for highway improvement and adoption.
You’ll manage the delivery of s38 and s278 agreements under the Highways Act, negotiating technical solutions for road layouts, junctions, drainage, and lighting. You’ll also ensure compliance with CDM regulations, health and safety legislation, and traffic management requirements.
Your leadership will extend to mentoring junior staff, conducting performance reviews, and supporting recruitment. You’ll also represent the Highway Authority at public and planning meetings, and collaborate closely with planning and technical approval teams to ensure high-quality infrastructure delivery.
Your work will be based around the construction for the new nuclear power station, Sizewell C, in Suffolk.

You will need
- to ideally be an incorporated engineer or have significant experience in a relevant field or project management.
- to be experienced in civil engineering, preferably with experience of using highway design guidance such as the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) and UK standards
- to be able to demonstrate technical ability and an understanding of the use of plans and drawings.
- knowledge of national highway engineering design guidance and specifications
- understanding of Construction Design Management (CDM) and Health and Safety Legislation
- to be passionate about working in a team seeking sustainable engineering solutions.
- some knowledge of planning particularly with respect to NSIPs would be an advantage.
- experience managing small teams and delivering complex infrastructure projects
- excellent communication skills to interpret and present technical information clearly

The team
This role sits within the Transport Strategy Team, part of the Growth, Highways, and Infrastructure Directorate at SCC. The team is responsible for advancing Inclusive Growth through transport initiatives across Suffolk. You’ll work closely with colleagues in project management, planning, and highways who support the delivery of Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs).
You’ll be part of a supportive, inclusive, and dynamic team environment, engaging with a challenging and varied workload tied to high-profile construction projects. The role offers access to regular technical presentations, a wide range of learning opportunities, and support for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and professional accreditation.
