Summary
Key Duties: Clinical Leadership To ensure there is an effective and consistent approach to establishing and maintaining communication with children and their families about relevant aspect of health and care, overcoming any differences in communication between the people involved. To assess, plan, develop, implement, evaluate, and modify holistic evidence based care in the best interest of the patients and families. To maximise and implement opportunities for meeting health education and promotion needs of patients and families. To ensure that the needs of children attending the department are met taking account of growth and development, physical, psychological and social needs. To take appropriate action to ensure the safety of patients, including the delegation of patient care to nurses with the appropriate level of skill at all times. Lead others in the development of knowledge, ideas and practice. To initiate and contribute to the development of practice within the multi professional team. To collaborate with senior medical and nursing staff in the development of practice. Plan, deliver and evaluate programmes of care to address the child and families health and well-being needs within scope of professional practice and competence. To undertake advanced roles in line with identified service needs following appropriate education and assessment of competence. To supervise other nurses within the paediatric department who have undertaken appropriate education and training, and assess competence to undertake advanced roles. To ensure all trust wide guidelines, policies and procedures relevant to the clinical setting are disseminated and implemented. To work in partnership with the Ward Manager in ensuring effective Infection Control procedures are followed, assisting with audits and other data requirements. To ensure good standards of practice within the department through quality assurance measures such as audit. To ensure practice within the department is in the best interest of the child and that safeguarding procedures in line with local and national policy are adhered to. Report and escalate untoward incidents in line with trust policy. Report and implement changes in practice identified through risk reporting procedure and ensure thorough dissemination of shared learning. Operational Responsibilities To take delegated responsibility for the production and completion of an E-roster for the staff tprovide effective and well-balanced cover to meet the requirements of the service and ensures the presence of a suitably qualified and experienced nurse at all times. To liaise with other Ward/Department Managers within the Directorate and other Directorates as necessary, to place workload and skill mix as effectively as possible. To inform and escalate to the Ward Manager / Matron / Directorate Manager any problems regarding nurse management. Represent and deputise for the department manager at meetings as required. To contribute to the development of Childrens services To facilitate the development and implementation of quality improvements. To ensure effective and constructive links between the activities of the childrens ward and: 1) acute paediatric services including childrens clinic, emergency department and theatres 2) Other departments with children attending i.e. ENT, radiology 3) Community childrens services To ensure effective two-way communication with all disciplines so that patients and families receive optimum care. To provide information for and participate in studies to determine workloads, patient dependency and quality assurance. To manage admission of planned and urgent ward attenders and day cases to ensure adequate nursing cover and safe practice. Maintain the custody of controlled drugs according to statutory procedure, ordering replacements, checking and administering all drugs according to the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust policy. Manage ordering and maintaining adequate stocks of supplies and provisions within the Department including procurement and remote requisitioning. To take all measures to ensure safety and report all accidents/incidents to the general manager and to monitor the safe and effective use of all equipment and economic use of supplies. Maintain accurate records relating to all aspects of departmental management, ensuring appropriate reporting mechanisms are used. Allocate, co-ordinate, monitor and assess the work of teams and individuals. Monitor and maintain physical and financial resources for work area and contribute to managing financial resources. Act as deputy to the budget holder in managing staffing and other budgets. To be responsible for the management of Health and Safety matters, including infection control, identifying and documenting compliance with all local guidance and statutory regulations. Ensure all staff are conversant and comply with Trust guidelines, Policies and procedures. And attend compulsory education and training as instructed. Diffuse challenging behaviour amongst staff working in the ward area and act as a role model to ensure that all potentially difficult situations are managed in a sensitive manner, reporting any such incidences to the Ward Manager / Matron immediately. 3. Staff Development/ education and training In collaboration with the Manager and MDT teams facilitate processes to enable all staff to reach their full potential by enabling them to develop professional, clinical, managerial and communication skills identified through professional development review (PDR) process and personal development plans (PDP). To identify areas for development of skills and competence in accordance with NMC guidelines. To develop the role of nursing within their speciality and undertake training and assessment to advance clinical skills as appropriate. To facilitate the practice, supervision, and assessment of advanced skills for appropriately educated and trained members of the team. Facilitate education and training of registered and non-registered staff, and assist junior staff to develop clinical and managerial skills in accordance with their level of competence. To actively promote a positive learning environment. To ensure all junior staff have appropriate mentorship and supervision and to act as a mentor/coach when required. To ensure all learners have appropriate supervision and mentorship in accordance with their objectives, working closely with the Professional Development Team, Clinical Educator, Childrens Services and the University. Clinical Governance Monitor and maintain health and safety and security of self and others in own workplace. Assist the Ward Manger to investigate and monitor clinical incidents across the designated area, ensuring that lessons learnt are identified and used to change clinical practice. Support the Ward Manger with the instigation of patient and public involvement activities in the ward area leading to service improvement. Assist in research projects where appropriate. Contribute to quality and improvement. Support equality, diversity and rights of children and their families. To ensure that nursing procedures are implemented and maintained in accordance with the policies of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. To act within the trust safeguarding children policy and referral framework in dealing with any child protection issues. To participate in the development and setting of standards, ensuring that acceptable levels are maintained. Escalate a hazards/unsafe practices appropriately and to ensure all accidents/untoward incidents are reported in accordance with trust policy and procedure. Human Resources To assist with the management, the selection and interviewing of staff within the ward/department. To ensure implementation of relevant and current induction programmes for newly appointed staff. In collaboration with the Ward Manager monitor and manage staff performance through professional development review process. To be responsible for the maintenance of day to day discipline within the department. To counsel staff in relation to professional matters. Assist Ward Manager in ensuring internal staff records are updated on a regular basis e.g. staff absences. Direct liaison with consultants in planning and managing care of patients.
