A well-established SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) school in Stockport is seeking a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to support pupils with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD). The school provides a safe, nurturing, and highly personalised learning environment for children and young people with complex medical and physical needs, including those requiring personal care and hoisting. This role is initially offered on a temporary basis, with the potential to become a permanent position for the right candidate. It is ideal for individuals with a background in care, support work, or health and social care, especially those with experience in lifting, hoisting, and working with non-verbal or medically vulnerable children.

Your new job

As a Special Needs Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers and therapists to support students aged 4-19 with a range of severe and complex learning difficulties. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting pupils with personal care, including toileting and feeding
  • Using hoisting and manual handling equipment safely and confidently
  • Assisting with sensory-based learning activities and therapy sessions
  • Promoting communication, independence, and emotional wellbeing
  • Working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team

What you'll need to succeed

  • Experience supporting children or adults with PMLD, SLD, or complex SEND
  • Confidence in using hoisting equipment and providing personal care
  • A calm, patient, and empathetic approach to behaviour and communication
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills
  • A background in care work, support work, or special education is highly desirable
