Summary
The post holder will.
• Use technical equipment to safely draw blood from patients
• Explain the process of drawing blood clearly to a patient
• Reassure and calming patients who might be nervous or scared of the procedure
• Apply dressings to the wound created by drawing blood
• Register the blood and storing it in the correct environment
• Send blood samples to testing laboratories
• Maintain an organised and clean work area based on health and safety regulations and the guidelines of the Trust
• Answer patient questions regarding collection techniques and offering additional resources on the collection process, if the patient requests them
• Stock Keeping of supplies
The duties and responsibilities listed below are representative of a Phlebotomist
1. Collecting Blood Samples
Safely and accurately draw blood from patients using venepuncture
2. Verifying Patient Identity
Confirm patient details (name, date of birth, NHS number, etc.) to ensure correct sample collection and labelling.
3. Preparing Patients
Explain procedures, provide reassurance, and ensure the patient is comfortable before drawing blood.
4. Labeling and Handling Specimens
Correctly label blood samples and ensure they are handled, stored, and transported according to protocol.
5. Maintaining Equipment and Supplies
Ensure all phlebotomy equipment (needles, vacutainers, tourniquets, etc.) is clean, sterile, and ready for use.
6. Infection Control and Safety Compliance
Follow infection control guidelines, wear appropriate PPE, and dispose of sharps and biohazard waste safely.
7. Data Entry and Record Keeping
Accurately record details of the sample collection, patient data, and time of draw in both paper and digital formats.
8. Working with Healthcare Teams
Communicate effectively with nurses, doctors, and lab technicians to ensure smooth workflow and accurate diagnostics.
9. Monitoring Patient Reactions
Observe patients for adverse reactions (e.g., fainting, bleeding) during and after the procedure and respond appropriately.
10. Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
Stay updated with new techniques, safety protocols, and NHS or organisational policies related to phlebotomy.
