Summary

About the role:

The Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) team is located within the Coaching Service in Student and Campus Life Services. We are a small and dynamic team working in a strategically important part of the student experience, dedicated to supporting the transition, increased academic confidence and wellbeing, and progression of students new to the University.

The Coaching Service aims to:

grow the ability of our students to engage and succeed in their studies through increased self-efficacy delivered through a coaching approach, peer-on-peer academic and course support, and through extra support for carers, care leavers estranged students and refugees.
support students in realising their talents, building on existing skills to maximise degree outcomes, employment opportunities and post-study activities.

PAL mentoring can happen on a weekly or fortnightly basis in timetabled group sessions, within taught workshops, open studio or lab sessions and during drop-ins in the autumn and spring semesters. Most PAL mentoring takes place in person on campus but there may be opportunities to offer virtual mentoring.

The key principles underpinning our PAL provision are:

It encourages students to be resourceful and to use one another as a resource.
It benefits all students regardless of current academic competency.
It focuses on what and how you learn – both content-based and process-orientated.
It encourages collaborative and active learning.
It promotes academic integrity, learner autonomy, resilience and employability.
It gives privacy to practise the subject, making mistakes and building confidence.

About us:

The Peer Assisted Learning team in the Coaching Service is seeking to appoint an Administration and Training Coordinator with a specific focus on regular liaison with internal and external stakeholders; enquiry services; delivery of training to staff and PAL Mentors; and the coordination of administrative support.

You will work closely with our PAL Coordinators - designated academics within the Colleges – as well as colleagues within the Coaching Service and in other the student support services.

In the role, you will be involved in the development, design and delivery of training content, including for the online environment. You will provide ongoing support and development opportunities for PAL Mentors, Senior PAL Mentors, PAL team members and staff within Student and Campus Life. The latter may take the form of inductions, developmental workshops at meetings as well as orientation sessions.

You will nurture collaborative, operational working relationships with College staff as well as contacts in other services, and counterparts at other Higher Education Providers. This may involve presenting at internal and external meetings/ conferences and assisting in producing written reports on the impact of PAL provision year on year.

About you:

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys building and maintaining relationships; can manage competing priorities and resolve problems; and is seeking to use and develop their mentoring and coaching skills within a learning and teaching context.

To succeed in this role, you should be able to demonstrate the following essential experience:

Supporting or delivering training to groups and individuals.
Strong communication skills used in a wide range of interpersonal situations.
Able to form and maintain effective working relationships with various stakeholders.
Working as part of a team and across teams.
Excellent IT and web navigation skills; experience of MS Office/365, including Excel, SharePoint and Microsoft Teams; and the ability to extract and manipulate data to produce reports.
Broad based administrative experience in a complex organisation, preferably within Further or Higher Education.
