The Opportunity
To provide site-based oversight to waste generating activities during delivery of decommissioning and land remediation projects. The Waste Officer is responsible for ensuring practical arrangements for the characterisation and management of waste are implemented, that data required is collected to the required quality, and that generated wastes are subject to agreed packaging, storage and off-site consignment & to provide oversight to waste generating operations, ensuring that waste process are implemented.
- To ensure compliance with Environmental Permits, achieving and maintaining optimal levels of protection for the environment and the population, controlling the disposal of radioactive, controlled and hazardous wastes.
- To interface with the Project / Programme Manager and wider delivery team to understand project deliverables relating to waste production and disposal and liaise with relevant stakeholders to ensure waste activities are correctly planned and scheduled.
- Maintain a knowledge of options for the non-destructive and destructive assay of wastes and their use and limitations for the characterisation and management of different radioactive waste types.
- Understand waste classifications, waste treatment and disposal options and the requirements of their Conditions for Acceptance.
- Develop and implement waste processes appropriate for the segregation, sentencing, packaging and subsequent disposal of all waste types.
- Provide training to operatives on waste process requirements, review performance and provide constructive feedback to drive continuous improvement.
- Maintain and produce QA records for all waste packages or items.
- Review and record assay data provided by the project team to allow the correct sentencing and packaging of waste.
- Produce or assist in the production of consignment documentation.
- Seek advice from a Radioactive Waste Advisor to ensure that all waste management activities are appropriate.
- Seek advice from an DGSA to ensure that all waste transport considerations are addressed prior to movement of waste packages
Your duties and responsibilities will be:

- Report to Project Manager for any issues that arise from the provision of services in support of the business or that may have a commercial, QSHEW or legal impact on the company.
- As well as the Radioactive Waste Adviser, DGSA and ESH&Q Representative.

You will have the following qualifications & experience:
Qualifications
- Waste Management related qualification or 2 years industry experience. - Essential
- Membership of appropriate technical / professional body - Desirable
Experience & Knowledge
- Broad working knowledge of waste management functions and relevant legislation - Essential
- Familiar with waste hierarchy principles and legislation. - Essential
- Ability to provide advice and information on waste hierarchy application. - Essential
- Knowledge of health and safety at work legislation sufficient to ensure compliance within the work place. - Essential
- Able to carry out calculations and skilled in utilisation of technical or scientific data - Essential
- Previous experience in the nuclear industry - Essential
- Experience of working in a waste management environment - Desirable
- Used to dealing with confidential and commercial information - Desirable
- Familiar with QSHEW operating procedures and requirements etc. – Desirable
Skills & Abilities
- Competent user of MS Office - Essential
- Able to organise and prioritise own work and manage a heavy workload - Essential
- Ability to work under pressure, retain accuracy and keep to tight deadlines - Essential
- The ability to deal with potentially difficult situations relating to the waste management services - Essential
- Excellent report writing and record keeping skills - Essential
