The Department of Thoracic Surgery offers individualised patient care across the full spectrum of general thoracic surgical practice, serving a large population with dedicated clinics in Leicester, Burton, Kettering, Northampton and Peterborough. Our surgeons contribute as core members of the Lung Cancer, Mesothelioma, Lung Volume Reduction, Sarcoma and Neuroendocrine Tumour multidisciplinary team meetings. There are seven operating lists per week, at Glenfield Hospital. Patients are cared for postoperatively in a dedicated thoracic surgical unit, including a specialist high dependency care.

We are one of the leading UK centres for the surgical management of malignant pleural mesothelioma and emphysema, with an extensive lung cancer and general thoracic practice. The Unit boasts an international reputation for research across these areas. There are currently four Consultant Surgeons in the Unit, who are supported by a team of 14 Medics.

Glenfield Hospital is a 600-bed centre of medical excellence for clinical services, teaching and research. There are close links to Leicester Medical School, including teaching of undergraduate medical students. Glenfield Hospital has, year on year, increased the number of patients treated, introduced service developments and expanded the range of treatments available. We have gained an excellent reputation for the quality of services we provide as recognised by the results in the Quality Health Patients Satisfaction survey
