Are you interested and passionate about working with and supporting young people to grow and flourish? We believe that every child and young person deserves the best possible start in life. Our aim is for Edinburgh's children to be safe, healthy, nurtured, educated, active and respected.

We are committed to the Promise and Edinburgh's Promise is supported by a plan which is underpinned by 5 fundamentals - what matters to children and families, listening, poverty, children's rights and language. Our Behaviours of Respect, Integrity and Flexibility are the foundation for driving positive change in our workplace and support our way of working.

Alison Service has 9 individual semi-independent self-contained flats. This enables care experienced young people, 16+, to live in supported accommodation to develop skills to live independently. We work in partnership with young people and those supporting them to promote good outcomes for their future. Developing skills and confidence in managing a home, supporting young people into further education, or finding employment. Typically, each young person has an individual pathways plan until they are at least 19 years old. Each of these young people will have an allocated key team. We also provide aftercare and outreach to care experienced young people in the community, up to the age of 26. Therefore, the service sits between residential childcare and a community-based case holding responsibility.

The service supports many Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children (UASC). We offer accommodation within our flats and ongoing support in the community. A number of these young people have been trafficked into this country, with their journeys having been very traumatic. Many have little or no English language. We work in close partnership with allocated social workers, medical professionals and the Scottish Guardianship service.

The role of Residential Childcare Officer (RCO) revolves around developing dependable, caring and compassionate relationships with our young people. RCOs ensure that they uphold the rights of children and young people in everything that they do, whilst also supporting them to develop a sense of responsibility. This is an exciting time to join the team as we continue to build on and further develop our models of care, namely relationship-based practice, trauma informed care & The Promise.

We are seeking child centred, resilient and motivated individuals to positively role model and who can make a difference in the lives of young people. The successful candidates will have experience of supporting young people, have a commitment to promoting children's rights and advocating for their rights. The candidate should have good communication & interpersonal skills, be reliable and adaptable with a clear focus on improving the outcomes for vulnerable young people.

You should have or be working towards completing SVQ Level 3/HNC or equivalent in Child Care/Social care or related area, or other relevant qualification at SCQF Level 7, or above. There is also a requirement to register with the Scottish Social services Council (SSSC) under the relevant category.

Children's Services is in the engagement stages of a service review, applicants should note that structures and posts will be subject to change as part of the service review.

This post is regulated work with children and/or protected adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. The preferred candidate will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check. Where an individual has spent a continuous period of 3 months or more out with the UK in the last 5 years, an Overseas Criminal Record Check will be required. You will be required to provide this check. An unconditional offer of employment and commencement in the post will be subject to the outcome of both these pre-employment checks being deemed satisfactory.

We're committed to creating a workplace culture where all our people feel valued, included and able to be their best at work, and we recognise the benefits that a diverse workforce with different values, beliefs, experience, and backgrounds brings to us as an organisation.

As part of our goal to improve our organisational culture and create a great place to work together for the people of Edinburgh, we want to make sure that we're bringing the best people into our roles, not just in their skills and experience but also in their approach to work.

To help achieve this, we're changing the way we interview and assess candidates by moving from a competency-based interview approach to a behavioural and technical (skills for the job) based approach. This new way of interviewing will allow us to assess how you think and how you would bring Our Behaviours of Respect, Integrity and Flexibility into your ways of working.
