Band: 2 £24,169pro rata if part-time
Hours: 15hrs per week (WTE 0.4), all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working
An exciting opportunity has arisen within this busy Pathology service to join the Blood Science team. You will be key members of the team ensuring timely sample collection and delivery for analysis whilst always maintaining patient safety. You will be required to provide a service that meets the quality standards of ISO 15189:2012 and participate in out of core hours work patterns, working weekends and bank holidays, which attract salary enhancement. You will work collaboratively with colleagues within Pathology and across the organisation to deliver a patient focused service.

To provide an efficient and empathetic phlebotomy service to inpatients across MKUH, contributing to timely diagnosis and therefore treatment and aiding with discharge of our patients.
Internally:
• Liaise with ward staff to ensure the provision of a quality service whilst working within the constraints of the role.
• Communicate effectively with patients in order to perform venepuncture whilst displaying compassion.
• Liaise effectively with laboratory personnel to ensure that samples are collected according to departmental SOPs and ensuring compliance with UKAS ISO 15189 standards.

Perform venepuncture on patients as requested and in accordance with the policies of Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the Pathology Support Unit.
To visit designated areas of the hospital to collect blood samples as set out by the team leader and according to the needs of the Trust.
To ensure samples are taken in accordance with departmental SOPs (standard operating procedures) and to mix and label specimens with due care and attention.
To be polite and considerate to patients, engaging with them and explaining clearly the process to ensure consent is gained before proceeding with venepuncture.
To ensure samples reach the laboratory within the required time for those samples with special conditions and at regular intervals for all routine tests to allow for timely processing.
To communicate effectively with laboratory personnel regarding any urgent samples and with clinicians regarding any concerns with patients or issues on the wards.
To provide a phlebotomy service on weekends and bank holidays.
