Summary
This is an exciting opportunity for a paediatric nurse or qualified nurse with paediatric experience who is innovative, motivated and creative to join the Healthy Child Programme 0-19 service (Health Visiting and School Nursing).
The postholder will
• lead the service delivery to promote continence and manage incontinence of children and young people 0-19 years, working as part of the wider multidisciplinary team to advise and support, treat and signpost children, young people and their families in the management of continence.
• have the specialist skills, knowledge and experience to assess children’s continence needs, plan, implement and monitor care.
• provide specialist advice to parents/carers, members of the School Nursing and Health Visiting service and other professionals.
The post holder will Use their specialist knowledge of continence management, be responsible for developing, leading, planning and delivering a continence service for children and their families.
The post holder will use specialist skills, carry out assessment of children’s continence needs, analysis and interpret complex information to identify appropriate specialist programmes of care/interventions and evaluates clinical care.

Communicates highly sensitive information in an empathetic and reassuring manner, adapting communication appropriately to meet the needs of children / young people, their parents or guardians, including those with special educational needs and disability.
Provide specialist consultation to HCP 0-19 staff and other professionals which supports the care of children with continence difficulties, including supporting the development of specialist care plans for children in education.
Refer children and young people to other specialists and agencies including Children Community Nurses, Acute and Community Paediatricians.
To act as coordinator and key worker for delegated children and families with continence issues and to delegate work as appropriate to other members of the HCP 01-9 service.
Plans provision of care for children and young people including clinics and health education. Co-ordinate and support staff to deliver this provision.
To work as part of HCP 0-19 team using a person-centred approach which includes assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for children aged 0-25 years who have disabilities and/or complex needs.
Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is an integrated Trust and the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, serving a population of 284,300. To work as part of HCP 0-19 team using a person-centred approach which includes assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for children aged 0-25 years who have disabilities and/or complex needs.
During the absence of the Clinical Team leader for SEND, to lead and promote team working and contribute to the delivery of services within the team
To develop evidence-based practice by utilising research and auditing clinical effectiveness for children/young people with bladder and/or bowel dysfunction
Implement policies and propose changes to practices, procedures for continence pathway
Refer children and young people to other specialists and agencies including Children Community Nurses, Acute and Community Paediatricians.
To act as co-ordinator and Key Worker for delegated children and families with continence issues and to delegate work as appropriate to other members of the HCP 01-9 service.
To understand and manage databases and allocate work in order of priority for yourself and others.
To contribute to the identification of training needs within the team.
To deliver continence training to registered staff, non-registered staff and student nurses ensuring compliance to NMC standards to support learning and assessment in practice.
Support and supervise junior staff who assess children and young people with bowel /bladder problems to ensure compliance with related service guidelines and protocols.
To support and train parents/carers in the correct use of identified medical equipment and continence products. To foster confidence, competence and independence in families caring for their children at home.
Work autonomously without direct supervision, accountable for own professional action
Keep timely, concise and accurate records, maintaining confidentiality and in line with trust policy and NMC guidance.
To be responsible for own professional actions and recognise own professional boundaries through interpretation of clinical/ professional policies relevant to the local team and / or identified area of expertise.
Contribute to the continued and future planning, monitoring and development of continence service.
To actively participate and engage in PDR and KSF systems and in professional and personal development.
