Summary

Senior Gardener
Inch Park Nursery

Salary: £25,322 - £27,727 (pro-rate for part-time)
Hours: 18 per week, 52 weeks

The salary package is enhanced by a minimum of 27 days leave per year rising to a maximum of 35 days per year dependant on continuous service, plus 6 public holidays, In addition there is generous employer pension contributions and numerous employee benefits.

To undertake all duties associated with plant and crop production including ornamentals and growing vegetables / soft fruit. Ability to create, implement, and design floral planters, flower beds and stage plant displays in the plant shop. Working knowledge of plant production machinery.

Candidate to have excellent retail and customer service experience. Experience of working with and monitoring volunteers and community groups. Undertake guided tours and support all community groups and educational initiatives that might occur at the Nursery. Ability to take initiative and monitor work on a daily basis to achieve targets and maintain high standards.

Contributes expertise to the development of initiatives, plans and policies.

Supports the development of team-working within gardening squad.

Assists in training and instruction of gardening staff as required by the Service.

Deputises for other supervisors as required by the Service.

Identifies and initiates opportunities for operational and horticultural improvement within the duties of the position.

Knowledge and skills in horticulture and parks and grounds maintenance is required and a relevant qualification to SVQ 2 level or equivalent.

Although post holders are not directly responsible for day to day supervision of staff, they are expected to support and direct and, when appropriate, supervise new starts, apprentices, students and other shadow workers. They are expected to promote effective team working at all times.

Assists in the preparation and implementation of site management proposals for parks, gardens and greenspaces, including cemeteries, schools and other Council properties.

Where appropriate assist in the design and preparation of training courses and assessments which enhance and develop horticultural skills.

Assists in the delivery of Council policies and service improvement initiatives and provide appropriate performance information.

Implement operations to deliver horticultural standards.

Contribute to the development of, and the implementation of, Parks Quality Assessments, Green Flag Award applications, Park Improvement Plans and site management plans.

Investigate customer service requests / enquiries and take appropriate action.

Use hand held technology to record work, receive instructions and report back on actions or problems identified.

Assist in the preparation; review and updating of operational risk assessments.

The post holder will be expected to operate a range of vehicles, machinery and equipment.

Our salary range typically reflects the initial starting salary and annually increases until it reaches the top of the range.
