Job Description for Teaching Support Assistant
Job Title\Post Teaching Assistant
Salary Grade 2 Point 06 (5-6)
Hours 32.5 hours per week term time (plus 1 week)
Responsible to: Performance Manager
Pension Scheme: Local Government Pension Scheme
Purpose of Role
To support and assist teaches as part of a professional team to contribute to raising standards of pupils’ achievement and to undertake a range of learning activities under the professional direction and supervision of qualified teachers and/or SENDCo colleagues in line with the school’s policies and procedures.
Principal Responsibilities
Providing support for pupils, teaches and the whole school as outlined below.
Main Duties
Support for Teacher
1. Assisting in the preparation and reproduction of learning materials and the management of resources.
2. Assisting in the deployment and setting up of equipment and resources and making them ready for use in order to organise the teaching environment.
3. Overseeing the care and cleanliness of the teaching environment, equipment, apparatus and materials.
4. Assisting in the preparation of display materials and the copying and duplication of teaching materials.
5. Supporting teaching staff or senior colleagues with routine administration ie filing reports, distributing leaflets and reports.
6. Contributing to the assessment of pupils’ progress and development as directed by the teacher through observations, basic record-keeping and discussion with the teacher.
Support for the pupil
1. Supervising the use of equipment as required to maintain pupils’ needs and support their participation in learning tasks and activities.
2. Assisting in ensuring that the length of time spent on tasks and activities is consistent with the individual pupils needs and according to instructions.
3. Assisting pupils to carry out programmes set by teaching staff.
4. Assisting individual pupils or small groups of pupils in classroom activities under the specific direction of the teacher and/or other support staff.
5. Supporting all pupils included in a mainstream setting, support base, home base or special school or any other learning environment as appropriate.
6. Maintaining awareness of pupils’ needs and targets.
7. Assisting with distressed children under the general direction of teaching staff or other members of the support staff.
8. Assisting in the provision of activities for the fullest development of the pupils which may involve work outside the school base and in the local community.
9. Undertaking duties in connection with personal hygiene and welfare of pupils as directed by the teaching staff.
10. Having and applying a higher level of understanding of SEND as determined by the SEND Code of Practice.
11. To be responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children within the school.
Support for the school
1. To assist with the general pastoral care of pupils, including helping pupils who are unwell, distressed or unsettled
2. Assisting in maintaining a safe environment for pupils and staff.
3. Accompanying teachers and classes on educational visits as required.
4. Assisting in the supervision of pupils during the day and in the playground school grounds as required.
5. Assisting in ensuring that pupils adhere to the behaviour policy of the school and providing feedback to staff and senior colleagues on the effectiveness of strategies used.
6. Contributing to preparing reports on pupils as appropriate.
7. Liaising with parents and other parties as required.
8. Contributing to the whole schools’ self evaluation process.
General Requirements
1. Attending and participating in training and development activities as required.
2. Participating in professional development and review.
3. Assisting teaching staff or senior colleagues in escorting pupils home as and when required as directed by the teaching staff.
4. Attending meetings, liaising and communicating with colleagues in the school, outside agencies and other relevant bodies.
5. Being an effective role model for the standards of behaviour expected of pupils.
6. Having due regard to confidentiality, child protection procedures, health and safety, other statutory requirements and the policies or the governing body and the local education authority.
Health & Safety
Under the provisions contained within the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, it is the duty of every employee to take reasonable care of themselves and for others at work, to co-operate with BVPS as far as necessary to enable them to carry out their legal duty and not to intentionally or recklessly interfere with anything provided including personal protective equipment for Health & Safety welfare at work.
