Summary
JOB DESCRIPTION Title: Staff Nurse Grade: Band 5 Location: Out Patients, Worcestershire Royal Hospital Professionally Accountable to: Matron Reports to: Department Sister Job Purpose: To gain experience, initiate and maintain a systematic, holistic approach to patient care, its implementation and evaluation. To contribute towards an atmosphere that is conductive to learning and the initiation of research based practices. To participate in maintaining a safe working environment. The post holder would be able to gain experience in management by participating in the management of the department alongside more senior staff. To assist with changes and improvements within the department. To coordinate and manage clinics within the outpatients department. Key Relationships: Senior and Junior medical and nursing staff, ward clerks, facilities staff, other health care professionals, social workers, other care providers, patients and their relatives, volunteers. Risk Assessment: The post involves manual handling activities and exposure to body fluids and chemicals. May involve some VDU work and individuals may be exposed to violence and aggression. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Clinical/Professional Leadership Assist in assessing peoples health and wellbeing related needs. Assist in planning and delivering own evaluation programme to meet peoples health and wellbeing needs. To maintain good and effective communications with patients, relatives and visitors to the department. To ensure that there is clear and concise reporting, oral and written, of relevant information regarding the care and well being of the patients. Establish and maintain communications with people about routine and daily activities, overcoming any differences in communication between the people involved. Influence the development of knowledge, ideas and work practice. To gain management experience by participating in managing the department. To assist medical staff and carry out procedures and treatments prescribed by them. To liaise effectively with other members of the multi-professional team to ensure a high standard of co-ordinated care to the patient. To assist in ensuring that all nursing staff work within the UKCC Code of Professional Conduct. To carry out nursing duties, procedures and policies in accordance with the NMC Scope of Professional Practice June 2002 and with the Trust Policies and Procedures. To attend professional meetings and study sessions as appropriate and keep an up to date professional portfolio. To prepare and set up clinics. To undertake clinical observations. To independently undertake clinical procedures and treatments within own capability. To be actively involved in Health Promotion. Clinical Governance Monitor and maintain health and safety and security of self and others in own workplace. Ensure own actions promote quality and alert others to quality issues. Support peoples equality, diversity and rights. To participate in constantly reviewing standards in the department and initiating change and improvement where necessary in discussion with the Sister. To ensure that all documentation is completed in accordance with Trust policies and current care concepts. To undertake training to ensure competency in the use of all equipment and ensure that it is in good working order. To participate in maintaining a safe environment in the ward for staff, patients and visitors under the terms of the Health and Safety at Work Act. Staff Development Develop own knowledge and skills and provide information to others to help their development. Assisting in the teaching and instruction of junior staff where appropriate, including student nurses and team assistants. Participating in nursing research. To develop and gain expertise within a specialist area. Management Contribute to the implementation of services. To identify personal, professional development training needs and career development aims in liaison with the Junior Sister. Supervise the work of a team. To maintain an awareness of professional developments in nursing and allied disciplines. Monitor and maintain physical and/or financial resources for department. To maintain personal, professional status by ensuring that it meets the requirements laid down by the UKCC. To assist in the control of the Unit budget by having due regard for economy where appropriate. To independently manage the smooth and effective running of clinics, ensuring patients are kept informed with regards to waiting times etc. When there is an unforeseen situation where there is no senior nurse present, to take charge of the department KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
