We have a fantastic opportunity for a motivated and talented individual to join our forward-thinking local authority in our Road Safety team.
You will be part of a dedicated team working to ensure that the highway network is safe for all users across North Somerset. The role will involve the processing, updating, and maintenance of the Council’s collision reporting system and undertake data analysis to inform the identification and prioritisation of road safety interventions.
You will also assist with the design, engagement and implementation of road safety interventions, including the preparation of scheme drawings and monitor and assess the performance and effectiveness of implemented road safety schemes.
As part of the team, you will help develop and implement our Road Safety Strategy and contribute towards achieving casualty reduction targets. This will include offering support and advice to colleagues and partners, and researching latest trends, initiatives and best practises to help maintain and drive continuous road safety improvements.
Depending on experience, the successful applicant may have the opportunity to undertake a programme of training and development leading to the successful completion of a formal qualification (Higher National Certificate or equivalent NVQ level 4) as well as on-the-job training and appropriate courses relevant to road safety.

Key Responsibilities:
- Process and analyse data on road collisions to identify key issues and highlight opportunities for proactive road safety interventions aimed at reducing both the frequency and severity of incidents
- Assist with the identification, prioritisation, and concept development of road safety interventions and the preparation and implementation of highway safety schemes
- Contribute to the development and implementation of road safety policies and procedures
- Assist in the examination of serious and fatal collisions on the network
- Ensuring the integrity of collision data by being able to effectively validate, cleanse and resolve data quality issues
- Undertake site visits and attend meetings with internal and external partners
- Produce presentations, documents, project plans and spreadsheets to support the work of the team
- Communicate effectively with contractors, colleagues and the public, both verbally and in writing, through the appropriate use of case notes and other record keeping within information sharing protocols and record keeping policies
This position is currently based at our Castlewood offices in Clevedon. Please be advised that this office will be closing in 2025. Consultation is currently underway to determine the new location for colleagues based in Castlewood. This will be at Weston-super-Mare or within North Somerset.
Work Style

However, please note that during the induction period, it may be necessary to spend more time in the office to support your learning and development. We are flexible and open to discussions about your preferred working style, and if you wish to be in the office more frequently, this can be negotiated.
This role falls into the category of Flexible Worker which means you can expect to work in the following way:
- 2-3 days in the office
- Works both from home and the office, depending on the task at hand.
- Training is provided to help balance work-life and manage time effectively, with an emphasis on communication for team touchpoints and planning in-office days for collaboration.
About You
We are looking for an individual who is passionate about Road Safety and who possesses the following skills and experience:
Essential Criteria:
- A-level / BTEC Level 3 educated, or equivalent in a discipline relevant to the post, or equivalent demonstrable experience in working with data
- Ability to manage / organise own work and that of allocated resource to meet agreed deadlines
- Knowledge of highways, traffic or road safety engineering
- Ability to engage with internal and external stakeholders
- Good IT skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint
- Understanding of highway technical standards, safe working practices and legislation for service area
- Good communication skills – both written and verbal
Desirable Criteria:
- Experience of analysing data and presenting and reporting on trends using a variety of methods and techniques in a way which is insightful
- Experience of AutoCAD for the preparation of drawings
-Experience of written and verbal communication with varied organisations, including members of the public and Councillors
- Ability to think through how existing processes can be improved to the benefit of the service
- Experience of using Geographical Information System (GIS)
