Summary

As a Lecturer in Policing Practice at the University of South Wales, you will be expected to:
• Contribute to achieving the University’s vision, underpinned by offering exceptional
learning experiences, using a scholarly approach, applied research and innovative
delivery and assessment models, and so provide an excellent student experience.
• Create interest and enthusiasm in students, inspire them to learn and be an exemplary
role model.
The post holder will contribute to the delivery of the Subject area’s growing undergraduate
and postgraduate policing related awards. The post holder will be responsible for providing
effective and high-quality learning opportunities for student officers off and on campus. The
post holder will also be required to contribute to an excellent student experience for all
students and provide appropriate support and pastoral care for them. A key part of this role
will be scholarly activity and the undertaking of applied research to enable knowledge
transfer to internal and external stakeholders. Income generation activities may also be
required.
A key part of this role relates to the collaborative aspect of delivering operational policing
programmes and will involve ensuring that key stakeholders work together to deliver
programmes that align to the requirements of police force(s), the College of Policing and
USW.

Key responsibilities
The post holder will work with the Heads of Operational Policing and course team to
develop operational policing courses to their full potential so that they provide
professional, contemporary, employment-focused learning experiences for student officers.
The post holder will contribute to the academic standards, quality assurance and
enhancement of Policing and Security courses. For the course team the student officer
experience is key. The team focuses on the gradual development of its students
progressing from pedagogy to andragogy and the development of student officers in the
work place. The duties and responsibilities of the post holder will be to:
Student Experience
1. Promote and implement initiatives, working practices and positive working relationships
that enhance the student experience.
2. Commit to improving the student experience at all times, using the range of metrics
available, such as the National Student Survey (and other league tables).
3. Contribute to the wider student experience e.g. participation in recruitment events,
involvement in employability initiatives.
Learning and Teaching
1. Develop and deliver high-quality material and activity that meets the learning needs of
students and defined learning objectives.
2. Demonstrate good practice in teaching, learning and assessment through the use of a
wide range of learning resources and appropriate pedagogic practice.
3. Ensure that teaching is informed by contemporary and current research in the relevant
field and that students are engaged in debate, critical discourse and rational thinking.
4. Reflect critically on own teaching, learning and assessment practice, and implement
improvements.
5. Identify appropriate and effective assessment instruments and criteria, and engage
actively with the quality monitoring and enhancement processes.
6. Collaborate on the planning, design and development of programmes and short
courses and the curriculum contained within those programmes.
Research and Scholarship
1. Incorporate subject and pedagogic research and/or scholarship as part of an integrated
approach to academic practice.

2. Utilise your scholarly activity and relevant professional development to ensure currency
of knowledge to enhance the learning experience for students.
3. Engage in continuing professional development in relation to your academic and
professional practice.
Academic Citizenship and Leadership
1. Reflect critically on your own professional practice and how that can be used to enhance
your practice.
2. Engage in associated academic responsibilities, such as supervision of student projects,
postgraduate students, personal academic coaching.
3. Attend and contribute to subject group/research meetings.
4. Work effectively as a team member and where appropriate support or mentor
colleagues.
5. Contribute to committees and working groups and act as an exemplary ambassador for
Schools, Faculties and the University, as appropriate.
6. Provide direction and leadership as outlined in the appropriate descriptors and other
University guidance, including module and, where required, course leadership.
