Looking for your next challenge after the forces?
DUE TO THE NATURE OF THIS RECRUITMENT CONSULTANCY, WE ARE ONLY ABLE TO REPRESENT INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE EX MILITARY.
My client is offering an exciting opportunity to join a team that values discipline, resilience, and reliability — qualities we as military veterans bring in abundance. This trainee position is ideal for those who are physically fit, comfortable with heights, and enjoy working as part of a close-knit, safety-driven team across the UK and overseas.
Why It’s a Great Fit for Veterans:
• Operate in dynamic, ever-changing environments – just like the field.
• Use your problem-solving skills and situational awareness in practical, safety-critical settings.
• Apply your physical capability, teamwork ethic, and follow a clear chain of command.
• Continue learning with structured training and career progression.
• Travel and adapt to new locations as part of project-based work – familiar ground for many ex-service personnel.
The Role – Train to Become a Qualified Steeplejack
You’ll be working alongside experienced steeplejack professionals, learning the ropes (literally and technically) while supporting essential high-level work on industrial chimneys, ducts, flues, and tall structures.
Key Responsibilities:
• Assist in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of chimneys and tall structures.
• Support installation of aircraft warning lights, flagpoles, lightning protection systems, and more.
• Take part in rope access operations, scaffold work, MEWP and cradle tasks (full training provided).
• Contribute to on-site safety briefings, toolbox talks, and follow industry safety protocols.
• Record site work using digital tools and contribute to reporting processes.
• Work across the UK and abroad – travel and overnight stays are a regular part of the job.
Essential Qualities and Skills:
• Physically fit and prepared for manual outdoor work in all weather.
• Comfortable with heights and physical tasks – rope work, climbing, lifting equipment.
• Strong communicator and a dependable team player.
• Able to follow structured instructions and remain calm under pressure.
• High attention to detail, both practically and with reporting/site documentation.
• Driver's licence is beneficial.
• Awareness of asbestos, environmental procedures, and working at height is advantageous.
Qualifications & Training:
• GCSEs/NVQs in Maths, English, Science, or Design & Technology are helpful.
• All necessary working-at-height, rope access, and lightning protection training will be provided – no prior experience required.
• Regular in-house and external competency assessments to support progression.
What They Offer:
• A structured career path with in-depth training and development as well as internationally recognised qualifications.
• Opportunities to travel and work on major industrial sites.
• A respectful, safety-led work environment where your military experience is valued.
• A company culture based on mutual support, hard work, and professional pride.
What’s on Offer:
£28k basic salary, Paid overtime when required, Performance-related bonus, 20 days holiday + bank holidays, Christmas shutdown (using leave), 4% matched company pension (above statutory minimum), Pay review after successful probation, Monday–Friday hours (07:30–16:00), with lunch and tea breaks and structured on-the-job training & upskilling. Training can take between 2 – 3 years to become fully qualified and once qualified you can be earning in excess of £50k per year and you must be comfortable to operate at heights of about 100 meters, but not from day one.
