Summary

Job Purpose: To deliver high-impact, trauma-informed support for pupils with complex SEMH and/or autism needs. The role focuses on building secure, trusting relationships, supporting engagement in learning, and promoting emotional regulation and communication. The Experienced TA supports class-based and 1:1 delivery and models skilled practice to less experienced staff.


Key Responsibilities:

1. Support for Pupils

  • Build consistent, trusting relationships with high-needs learners.
  • Deliver proactive and responsive regulation support during dysregulation or crisis.
  • Implement EHCP targets, Behaviour Support Plans (BSPs), and individualised strategies.
  • Facilitate access to learning by adapting tasks and communication methods.
  • Provide mentoring, modelling, and social development support for pupils.

2. Learning and Curriculum Support

  • Support the delivery of differentiated curriculum content in collaboration with teachers.
  • Use assistive technology, visual supports, and sensory tools to aid access and engagement.
  • Deliver targeted interventions (e.g. Zones of Regulation, SCERTS-based strategies).
  • Monitor and report on pupil progress, engagement, and well-being.

3. Environment and Behaviour Support

  • Create and maintain calm, predictable, and safe learning environments.
  • Contribute to individual risk assessments and positive handling plans.
  • Supervise pupils during transitions, break/lunchtimes, and off-site activities.
  • Use restorative and relational practice consistently in line with the school ethos

4. Professional Collaboration and Development

  • Work closely with therapists, SENCO, teachers and behaviour teams.
  • Attend team debriefs, supervision, and reflective practice sessions.
  • Provide informal mentoring to newer or intermediate-level TAs.
  • Participate in CPD linked to SEMH, autism, and therapeutic approaches


Safeguarding & Conduct All staff have a duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of pupils. This role requires strong boundaries, professional conduct, and a calm, emotionally regulated presence in all situations.


Working Pattern: Full-time 8.30am-4.20pm Mon-Thurs & 8.30am-2.30pm Fri. (Part time may be available) Term-time plus 10 training days (some may be delivered as twilight sessions)

4 GCSE’s including maths & English L4Experience of SEMH & ASD
Level 3 TA qualification or equivalent experienceCPD in Team Teach, Zones of Regulation, or NVR
Full driving license and fully insured car available for workExperience in special school or AP setting
IT literateFamiliarity with SCERTS, PECS, or AAC tools
Significant experience supporting pupils with SEMH and/or autismExperience contributing to EHCP reviews and documentation
Skilled in de-escalation, co-regulation, and trauma-informed practice
Skilled in de-escalation, co-regulation, and trauma-informed practice
Emotionally resilient and calm under pressure
Understanding of sensory processing and communication needs
