Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Trust wishes to appoint 4 full time clinical teaching fellows, 3 in General Surgery and 1 in Urology commencing Wednesday 6thAugust 2025, for 1 year until Tuesday 4thAugust 2026.
The clinical teaching fellow posts in surgery are an exciting opportunity, and are aimed at prospective candidates who have completed the Foundation or Core Surgical Training programmes and/or those who are preparing to apply for specialist training programmes (either core or higher specialist training). They represent an opportunity to improve clinical skills, develop teaching skills and strengthen your curriculum vitae.
The clinical teaching fellow posts come with the additional benefit of financial support to undertake the Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Clinical Practice with the University of Edge Hill University which is a recognised course for application for Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.
The persons appointed will be based at the Royal Liverpool Hospital. These posts are split 50%-Clinical, and 50%-Teaching. The posts have a commitment to general surgery and urology on call at Core Surgical Trainee level. The surgical teaching fellow post is a new and exciting opportunity for successful applicants to improve clinical skills and develop their teaching portfolio.
The aim of these posts is to provide the successful applicant with a tailored clinical post, whilst allowing them to develop their teaching portfolio. The posts are to commence from 6thAugust 2025 and run until 4thAugust 2026.
There are four clinical posts which will be distributed across general surgery (3 posts; 1 HPB, 1 UGI, 1 Colorectal), and urology (1 post). Each post will have a supervising consultant who will help develop a tailored clinical timetable depending on an applicant’s clinical experience and training needs.

The posts come with a 50% FTE commitment to teaching. This will include delivering bedside and tutorial based teaching, providing mentorship and supervision of medical students. The successful applicant’s will be expected to pursue the certificate of Teaching and Learning in Clinical Practice, at Edge Hill University. The posts include a commitment to funding and time to attend study days for this.
The appointees will also take part in the general surgery on-call rota including night shifts and weekends, where applicable the post holder may be required to deputise for absent colleagues from time to time and to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances. The post holder will also be required to be available exceptionally for such irregular commitments outside normal rostered duties as are essential for continuity of patient care.
There will also be the opportunity to be involved in audit and quality improvement projects within the clinical departments.
