UGI Post CCT Abdominal Wall & Hernia Fellow

Job overview

An exciting opportunity is available for a motivated surgeon to join our consultant-led Abdominal Wall Unit as a Post-CCT Fellow training (ST8+, post-CCT or equivalent) this fellowship is designed to provide advanced, hands-on training in complex hernia surgery and abdominal wall reconstruction, with significant exposure to both open and laparoscopic techniques.

This is a 12 month post and is ideal for surgeons looking to further refine their expertise and prepare for a consultant career in hernia and general surgery.
You will work closely with a specialist team performing high volumes of:

• Rives-Stoppa repairs (open and laparoscopic)
• Posterior component separation (TAR)
• TAPP and TEP inguinal hernia repairs
• Complex ventral and parastomal hernias, often in collaboration with colorectal and bariatric teams
Over the course of the fellowship, you will be expected to participate in at least 25 TAPPs, 25 TEPs, and 20 complex reconstructions. Our multidisciplinary approach includes prehabilitation, BOTOX, and one of the UK’s highest caseloads using Fasciotens to facilitate closure.

The role also includes participation in the emergency general surgery rota at St Helier—one of the busiest units in South-West London—offering consultant-level experience in a high-acuity setting.

Additional opportunities in research and audit are available for those with academic interests.

Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust offers an extensive range of services, including cancer, pathology, surgery, and gynaecology. Also health and care teams from organisations (the London Borough of Sutton, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust, Sutton GP services, The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and South West London & St George’s Mental Health Trust). The team will ensure people have the right support in place for them to maintain their independence and live healthily and safely at home for as long as possible.
