Summary

SEN Outreach Tutor (Makaton Experienced)

ABOUT THE ROLE Prospero Teaching is looking for a passionate and experienced SEN Outreach Tutor to deliver personalised, 1:1 tuition to young learners with Special Educational Needs (SEN), many of whom are currently not attending school.

This role is ideal for a qualified teacher or experienced SEN practitioner with Makaton training, who is confident delivering structured, engaging sessions outside of a mainstream classroom environment. You'll be supporting students with a range of needs - including autism, speech and language delays, and complex learning difficulties - helping them regain confidence and progress with their learning at a pace that suits them.

You'll be working in homes, local libraries, or other appropriate settings across Barking and Dagenham, supporting pupils who may have had disrupted educational experiences.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Deliver 1:1 tailored tuition to SEN learners using appropriate communication methods (e.g. Makaton, visual aids)
- Develop and implement individualised learning plans that meet each student's specific needs
- Build trust and rapport with learners to support emotional regulation and engagement
- Liaise with parents, carers, and Prospero's team to track progress and adjust plans as needed

CONTRACT DETAILS:
- Location: Barking and Dagenham
- Start Date: ASAP
- Hours: Flexible part-time sessions (typically between 1-3 hours per session)
- Pay: £25-£35 per hour (based on experience and qualifications)
- Contract Type: Temporary (with potential for ongoing work)
- Duration: Varies per student - generally long-term placements

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:
- QTS, QTLS, PGCE or extensive experience in SEN support
- Experience working with children with autism, learning difficulties, or speech and language needs
- Makaton trained or significant experience using Makaton in an educational setting
- A calm, nurturing, and patient approach to behaviour and emotional needs
- Up-to-date Safeguarding training (or willingness to complete it)

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Right to work in the UK
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willing to apply for one)
- Two professional child-related references from the last two years

WHY WORK WITH PROSPERO TEACHING?
- Competitive hourly rates
- Flexibility to choose sessions that suit your availability
- Opportunities to make a lasting impact with young people who need it most
- Access to free CPD, including safeguarding, behaviour management, and SEN strategies
- Ongoing support from our experienced SEND team

TO APPLY Please send your up-to-date CV to be considered. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted.

Prospero Teaching is committed to the safeguarding of children and young people. All roles are subject to vetting, enhanced DBS checks, and appropriate referencing.
