Summary

A Vacancy at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.


The appointee will be based at the main ophthalmic site, Boston House. They will, however, be required to provide a comprehensive ophthalmology service to support the Trust’s ophthalmic workload wherever it is located. This will involve regular travel to other sites, in particular Leigh Infirmary where surgery is performed.

Lead and develop a specialised Glaucoma service for the diagnosis and medical and surgical management of patients who present with all forms of glaucoma. With the current backlogs, there is much enthusiasm to expand virtual glaucoma clinics and care

Participate on a weekly basis in the running of the Urgent Referral Clinic. Accept personal responsibility for the total clinical care of patients referred to them. Contribute to and participate in the development of the service and assist in the delivery of the national 18-week programme.

Collaborate positively with colleagues to provide effective clinical leadership for all the staff in the service. Work collaboratively with all staff to establish and sustain a team approach in managing waiting lists, reducing waiting times and ensuring essential services are delivered in line with the Department’s and Trust’s protocols and patient charter/service requirements.
Contribute to Clinical Governance, Clinic Audit and evidence-based practice within the department. Participate in teaching of undergraduates and postgraduates and other health care professionals. Provide supervision and training to junior hospital doctors and to facilitate the expansion of the role of Non-Medical Practitioners. To contribute to the management of ophthalmic services within the Trust. Participate regularly in departmental case review meetings.

Our Trust has in the past year built a close relationship with the Edge Hill University Medical School to offer undergraduate and postgraduate placements to medical students.

We welcome any requests for departmental visits and informal discussions in relation to the post.
