Summary
The Directorate of Vascular Surgery currently comprises 14 surgeons working flexibly to support the network. Each consultant has an elective job plan which involves sessions at one of our network sites, in addition to sessions at the Aintree site Hub. All consultants participate in complementary C1 and C2 rotas during which they are free of any elective commitments. The unit runs on a 14-week cycle with each consultant being C1 and C2 once during the cycle, such that 12 weeks out of 14 are normal elective weeks. The C1 is responsible for managing the main ward and dealing with acute referrals/transfers. The C2 supports C1 by doing supplementary ward work and also being available to deal with vascular emergencies both at the hub and network sites. Friday afternoon is set aside as a Directorate session which begins with the forthcoming weekly plan at 1.30 and a review of all inpatients and patients requiring urgent surgery. The rest of the afternoon consists of a rolling programme of audit, teaching, clinical governance, directorate meetings, research presentations and invited guest lectures. There is a 1 in 14 on call rota covering all our network sites. Wherever possible emergencies are transferred to the Aintree Hospital (which is part of the Mersey Major Trauma Collaborative) but we have committed to attending network sites if required. In addition to covering our network sites we also provide cover for the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital (LHCH), Alder Hey (Childrens) Hospital and Liverpool Womens Hospital. We are also a tertiary referral centre for a wider area including the whole Cheshire and Merseyside region, North Wales and the Isle of Man.A system of consultant led daily post-take ward rounds is in place.
